A hurried compact has been put together for 3 pm today to discuss a commercial gillnet fishery to take place above the Willamette on Thursday night. This is a springer fishery.
The run size has eclipsed the 82,000 number in which available impacts bump to 2% from 1.5% and with the official run switching to "summer chinook" on Saturday, the netters want in to fish their allocation of springers completely. The compact phone number is 360-709-4803 Pin is 530179# Join in and speak your piece if you like. Last edited by cosmo; 06-13-2007 at 02:49 PM. |

It's not a huge deal, but they did call me just a moment ago as well...
Sounds as if a few of the netters (not many) crowded someone into a day on the water. They can't wait until Friday's compact meeting since everything turns into summer chinook. Few netters will go up there (if they even approve it, which is not guaranteed) and few anglers are in the areas they'll net... Not everyone in the department thought there should be a meeting.

Oh that's just wonderful. I plan on fishing up river on Saturday. No way the netters will kill any summer fish, right?

They may get a few, but not many netters will be able to get up there. A catch of 330 or so kept is predicted (sounds high, though).
Season set Thursday night, 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Friday. Upriver from 205 to Marker 85 only. More details in "The Birdsnest" http://blog.oregonlive.com/billmonroe/ Interesting to hear about potential Willamette problems.

I'm still suspect about their timing. It's no secret that there are some big fish in the river now. We've been releasing them for the past couple weeks above 205 with high expectation about keeping a few when the season commences this Saturday. The netters are after poundage. And I believe they planned this all along. :frown:

Perception is so incredibly important, and they just do not get it! Let me guess they want to sell steelhead too!

What about the incidental Summer Steelhead catch. The river is full of them right now. Or, is the mesh size so large they won't catch any,..except the big ones. THIS SUCKS. WHEN IS ENOUGH, ENOUGH!!!

Makes you wonder why they let the sport fisherman above I-5? NOT!
has anyone heard the commercial on the radio about the "copper river salmon run being bigger so prices have dropped?" Hopefully they lower the price on "net caught columbia springer" to the point they can't pay for gas! |

Psst........I'll meet you in the bunker.
How could this commercial fishery be a sinister conspiracy if the run to the mouth just now revealed itself to allow the jump to the 2% impact rate? Upper CR Summers you ask? Yes, they will take some. The coded wire tags will reveal this and the minimal upper CR summer Chinook harvest will be taken into consideration when the evil conspiracy begins again and the summer commercial fisheries are planned.

I don't have anything personally against any of the netters, but the nets should be banned on the Columbia. Most have real jobs like all of us, but they net too because they have the permits, most likely handed for generations. But seriously, how can they support their families on what little they get from the river, so they have other jobs. Their netting on top of what other income they have. My two cents is keep them nets out of the river below Bonnieville, the netters don't need to do it anyway. Shane

"....Chum salmon were one of the target species taken in gill net fisheries in Oregon bays and in the lower Columbia River prior to the 1950s ...."
Do they still put nets in the bays? I know the Kilches River gets a LOT of Chum Salmon, do the commercial guys get to net there too? |

Indeed. The Willamette run looks to be off from the forecast. Funny how the overall recreational catch rates would have suggested the run to meet expectations.
Typically late June has a surge of springers going over the falls. It most likely won't be enough to meet the forecast but it will help.

Mesh size is 8 inch minimum, so no, it's not likely to get many steelhead.
Sandy River is a sanctuary mentioned in the motion to allow. There was some talk about potential regulation changes on the Willamette, although most have quit fishing down this low. Yes, D100...you told us so.

How does one find the number and PIN? I called the Oregon Fins and Feathers in Salem one time and requested the number and PIN to simply listen. They asked who I was and I told them I was a citizen that wanted to listen to the compact meeting on the phone, they told me they don't allow that. Do Oregonians need to go through Washington State to get access on the phone?

The run has been upgraded, this is great news! This is great news for all user groups! But, this is the best news for the fish. Yes, the run is low but better than forcast.

8" min. mesh, they won't get many steelhead, they'll just get the bigger ones to take that DNA out of production.
