Default Good morning--intro time!

Good morning. I've been lurking in the bushes for quite some time, so I thought I should introduce myself. My name is Kevin, and I own and operate the charter boat Gold Rush in Westport. I had to think for awhile to come up with a unique story. This the 33rd summer I've been a skipper, and when you include my 7 years as deckhand, I 've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly as far as fishing goes. Then I thought of a unique one. It was one of the coolest charter trips I've ever been on.

Two years ago in mid-September, I took 5 fly fishers out for albies. I really wanted to put them on fish, as the organizer is an old student of mine. I teach high school chemistry too. We had 50+ pounds of 'chovies in the tank for chumming. The guys caught 25 on flies! It was awesome! We had glassy flat water with no breeze--absolutely the best we could have hoped for. My alternate skipper, my son who is my deckhand, and I added a few on bait as well. My son caught a 40+ pounder on a fishtrap too! It was quite a day.

The group were wonderful sportsmen--it was all about the albies sucking in their hand-tied flies. As Scotty, my alternate, said--"this is the most relaxing tuna trip ever."

I wish you all a safe and productive season. Please make sure and give larger boats wide berth when running. We have way too many close calls, with guys cutting in front of us, etc.

Good fishin'
Kevin

Welcome aboard Kevin. I am sure we have crossed paths out on the salt but have never spoken with you out there. Good luck this season and we will see ya around the canyon.

And watch for us sporties too. Some of us only have half a brain during tuna season. Just ask Tracker.

Welcome to Ifish. Great job at putting people out there to do what they love doing. And catching the Long Fins on a fly has to be something to remember for life.

Good to have ya aboard.

Skein--it was. One guy had a 10 weight rod--didn't work. He had one on for close to an hour, and just couldn't move it. We had to try to handline it, but it broke off. They're coming with 14's this year from what I hear.

I think I was out with Phil on the Ultimate that weekend. Should have been the 16th if I remember. What a picture perfect couple of days for fishing and running. Wide open bite and beautiful flat water.
I'm pretty sure I got to fish with you one time for salmon a few years ago. I always hear great things about your boat. I'm sure I'll be seeing you while I'm in a kicker boat buzzing around out of Westport this year.
Welcome aboard!

Just kiddin' ya, Goldrush. We made it happen several times last year, and plan to take it to the next level this year. Did their faces look sorta like this?

Our tools were 12wt's and I wouldn't have wanted to try anything less.

I'm surprised you didn't hear me whoopin' and hollarin' all the way to the canyon.

Welcome aboard, by the way, and I hope all your trips are as much fun as that one was.

They did have that look! I didn't know anything about flyrods until that trip.

By the way, I'm a lab nut, and that is a fine looking dog you have there! Mine is about to turn 11. She has more gray hair than I do.

A lab nut!!! Holy Moly, you and I are gonna have a lot in common. We gotta meet!

Here's my favorite "Mattie the Tuna Dog" shot, although I have many many fishing pics of her.

You ought to see her come alive when the clicker goes off. Zoweee!

And ask Corrirod what happens when you trick her.

Never, I repeat NEVER "check the drag" with the clicker on while Mattie is around. She shot out of the cabin like lightning only to find it was just me checking the drag and if looks could kill I'd have been dead 7 or 8 times I'm sure! She gave me the stink eye for at least an hour after that! Sorry Mattie.
