Default First Oregon Tuna!!!

Greetings,
My buddy Troy Guy works for NOAA fisheries out of Astoria Oregon. He is a pelagic birder and does transects all up and down the Oregon and Washington Coast. He just got back from a trip...here is his direct quote:

"I'm just back from a cruise. Way cool . We zig-zagged between 20 and
80 miles out from Gray Harbor, WA to Cape Blanco. We even got into the
tuna at 43.277 -125.845 on June 9th off Coos Bay. Three in the box,
jumpers around. I don't see any Tuna reports on Ifish, so I'm sure this
news would stir the pot, no? I'm sure the armchair
satellite-oceanographers on Ifish will be frothing with this news."

Alright guys...who's going to be the first sport boat to get them? Troy got them trolling handlines, but I don't think that counts.

Here is the map of the location of his catch.

Just thought you guys would want to know
lat,
steve

Looks like good water. Just North and West of the Eddy. Also looks connected to water heading towards Newport.

THAT's a long troll, grays harbor to cape blanco. Well, that is pretty much where the tuna water shows up out there.

TUUUUUUUUUUUUNA. Boy I'm glad all my tackle came in. Time to start
rigging up. Someone asked me if I thought the tuna would be here for the
tournament. I think it's a no brainer now. It's time to set up an exploration
run.

Translates to 125 50 / 43 17 ...... ~65 nm, 248* mag from Coos Bay. Pretty sharp temp break down that way.

Outside edge of Heceta Banks is pretty warm too.

Marty, if you're reading this, care to share what I told you the other night?

Hey guys, no pics, but I just talked to Troy on the phone. He was doing a bird transect so he coudn't come down to get in to the fishing. They saw jumpers, the captain slowed the boat down to 7 knots and out went the handlines. They were just using some simple feathers. They caught 3. Troy said he saw jumpers all around!
If you guys get all the tuna this year I am going to be ******!!! They have bypassed MB the past 3 years (basically since I moved back from Oregon!...wish I had never left!!!).
Good luck to you all. I hope they come in a little closer.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) looks to be the best day this week. Do I have a wingman? Crew? Jerry? Ron?

Wetsand shows:
West swell at 4 ft at 8 secs, wind NW 8 to 12

NOAA sez:
W wind 10 kt...becoming northwest in the afternoon. Wind waves 2 ft. West swell 5 ft at 9 seconds.

I think I'm serious.

Give it a few hours and you'll know you're not serious. Yes, the Wed forecast is the best one this week, but it's sandwiched in between two not so good days, at least not so good forecasts for me and my boat.

I thought the same thing, "What's so different about tuna?" I read about them for about a year (joined ifish 9/05) before actually catching one. When the first reels went off, I understood. You will, too. About half of my cerebral cortex is now occupied by tuna.

After returning from my first trip, I made a rather longwinded post about my journey along the path to tuna. You may travel the same route. Here's the thread if you would like to see it:

And it's not just the fish; you know, the hit, the run, the fight. No, it's also the preparation and the trip out, and the search. It's all the life out there; the porpoise, the albatross, the sharks and sunfish, and the birds. Then, when you cross that magical line and the water turns unbelieveably blue, and the land gets to be the slightest little sliver in the distance, and it dawns on you that you are in a place that only a few ever get to... then you begin to understand.

It ain't just the catchin'.

What was the line? "You can't handle the truth!!" None of us can. Believe me, you don't want to know.

I went once, then I bought a boat, then rods, clones, feathers, plugs, etc. etc. etc. It's not just a fish, its' an obsession.

Since I started fishing for Tuna my goal every year is to tag my 6 Halibut early season...so I can concentrate on Tuna when they arrive, if I'm lucky I can get a few Salmon days in also. Halibut is mostly about the food & make great office wall pictures, but your only allowed 1 per day 6 per year. Salmon are a lot of fun, & tasty also, but your only allowed 2 per day 20 per year, Tuna are the hardest fighting fish available in good #s, 25 per day(altho few have achived this) & most are caught on or near the surface...so no heavy or bulky gear is needed, & there is the blood bath, the Tuna pox, the sore arms...boat full of fish, It's hard to beat.

Skein .. if you don't answer this post today, I'll know you gave in to the fin.

I was there buddy when you got your first bendo on Julie Rose III. Remember discovering the gear shift button on the Avet? No one could have wiped that grin off your face with a stick.

Medics R US. There's a TA in Corvallis tomorrow night. Stop by and I'll try to splain it to you. Or get on a boat and be transformed.

Somewhere there is the bit about soul of a Tuna fisherman. One of the best narratives I've read about what goes on out of sight of land.

Anyone got that handy?

125+ is pretty far but they will get closer soon.

Good news but still a long ways out there. Nice to see things connected on the SST's just needs to push further north for all of us. That said, the person was not a salty dog, yes? So it does'nt count for any of us.

So the question still stands when will the first SALTY DOG OF IFISH catch the first Oregon Caught Tuna?

Try reading this:

It may bring some of it to light. Probably need to experience it to get a full understanding.

Save your pocket change for fuel
I will take you to the DARK SIDE as I promised you I would
Just stay on standby and when the time is right you will get a phone call from an overly excited fat guy that is heavily addicted to TUNA fishing telling you to pack a lunch and have that cute wife of yours bake up a batch of her wonderful cookies

Then you will never be the same
You may even ask me to give back the gear you gave me after the 1st trip

I can't wait till I hear from you Hank. Ya made my wife blush with your compliments. I am a lucky guy to have her. and her cookies

I guess I will just have to remain confused until I get out there for myself.

Some of us are looking at friday to run out there and find out. Just depends on the weather right now. I've kept my eye on that ploom for a couple of weeks now, just waiting for the stars to align to get after it. Hopefully in two days.

Oh brother... here goes! Just got off the phone last night with Alantani, and my reels will be ready to scream by next week! Team Stick Time... calling all hands... We'll be fishing the days before the fireworks pop, unless she sells.

Tuna Time is going Saturday...and is applying heavy pressure to join him.

Tight duration and 15+kt winds...not great but doable for sure!

So I guess you'll be joining him. Good luck fearless leader. I hope the weather clears up for you and you find the fish. Of course we'll be on the edge of our seats waiting for a report!

If I bend to the dark side...the sat phone will be in full effect so we can experience this together...or Dick will be calling me with reports...not sure I can handle sitting on the sidelines...this is killing me!

Chris, do tuna bite spuds? Better contact Mark Mc and have him make you a spud colored tuna bite. Bet it would work just fine.
