OT Pearl Harbor
This is way off topic. Went and seen Pearl Harbor tonight. Excellent movie. I've read several interviews with veterans that were there and they said the only problem they had was that it was much more violent and there was much more destruction in real life. I guess Disney toned it down quite a bit. It's hard to imagine anything being more destructive than what I seen.
Makes you glad to grow up in a time when we didn't have to see that.
I'm 29 and the closest thing my generation has come to a war is Desert Storm. I was a senior in high school then, seriously considering going in the Marines. My mother was having a fit because no one knew what that middle east conflict was going to turn into and here I was heading off to the Marines. I was smart though, figured I'd try college first and met my wife there.
You see the human side of it in the movie, unlike a documentary, and it makes you realize what animals human beings are. Why would anyone do that you have to ask.
Makes you pray that nothing like that happens again and very grateful that we haven't faced that. Hopefully whatever lessons were learned will last a long time to come.

Re: OT Pearl Harbor
My father was on Ford Island when the island was attacked.I'd ask him questions about it when I was a kid,he refused to talk about it said I didn't need to know and he would just as soon not have to remember.I'm 57 now he's 83 and just about two yrs ago,he and I where out fishing and he started talking to me about it you could tell it still really bothered him. I was in in the early part of Viet Nam and didn't really see any action. (Air Force) I came home in 65,So I don't really have any what I'd call bad memorys,My son was in Desert Storm pretty much in the thick of things,I hate to say this but it really screwed him up for a few years.
I just hope and pray we don't ever have another war where our granchildren have to go thru what our parents and us and our kids had too.I just know in our wildest imgaination,We could never know what it was like at Pearl Harbour on Dec.7th,I don't think the movies could even come close.

Re: OT Pearl Harbor
Is it as graphic as Saving Private Ryan? I couldn't see that film, neither could my kids. We tried.
I'd like to see it, but don't want to waste money walking out if the kids want to leave.

Re: OT Pearl Harbor
It was pretty graphic, not to the extent of Private Ryan though. Close but not quite. I know the wife didn't have to turn her head and look away. Not much blood at all. It's pretty fast paced. They show people getting shot and then they go onto the next area.
I'd take your kids though, maybe they too will see how lucky we are to live when and where we do. I'm sure they already do. But this will really reinforce it.
I think Disney did everyone a favor bringing it out on Memorial Day weekend. I never really think about Memorial Day, just another long weekend from work. Been thinkin about it since seeing this movie.

Re: OT Pearl Harbor
Jen, if your kids are mature then for heavens sake let them see what man does to man in this world, I was to young for W11 but but the "Korean Police Action" was enough for me. I saw Pearl Harbor today and yes it has some violence but not near as much as Saving Pvt. Ryan. There is just no way a movie studio is ever, ever going to portray the violence and sadness of men and women in war. Iam sure there are others on this board who have been thru it and will agree.

Re: OT Pearl Harbor
I am a veteran of the Gulf. No war is fun and pretty especially the longer wars. It still bothers me. Men turn into animals during a war, or conflict. It is a natural desire to survive, I don't think anybody is immune to the animalistic behavior. Our next war will probably be short and very devastating.
