Default Springers on Gitzits!!!

A new technique was utilized at Drano this year for late season Springers. I was pulling plugs at Drano when I came upon a bunch of boats sitting still with all their lines straight down. They were all parked in the channel near the point. The same spot that everyone anchors in when bobber fishing for steelies in the fall. Suddenly I saw one of the boats with a double. Then I saw another double in another boat. Being rather curious I inquired one of the guide boats on what the heck they were doing. Mr. Garett replied that if he told me he would have to kill me.
Wrong answer. Breaking out the binocs showed that they were using chartreuse gitzits, a plastic bait heavily used by bassers. These gitzits were stuffed with scent and/or herring, sardines etc. They were really slaying them with this method. Food for thought during next years Springer season. If I have offended any guides who use this technique, GO JUMP IN THE LAKE!

Hi Thumper,
Been putting a whippin on the walleyes up at Eagle Lakes. The Shad have showed up at Mcnary so it is time for myself and the kids to start having some squeeling fun! See ya on the water. Let me know if you want some walleyes. Freezer is getting too full!
Quit making fun of my glow trebles, the walleyes like em too!

By "parked" do you mean anchored? Anchoring where other people are trolling can cause a lot of heart burn. Were they jigging the gitzit's or just holding them still? It almost sounds like dead drifting with eggs but using a gitzit instead.

No they were not anchored. Just kinda hovering. Darn near like dead sticking for walleyes. Not jigging, just finding bottom and coming up a crank or two.

Oh sure now I have to find some lure called a gitzit and look to see what makes it so special... Got a picture so I will recognize it when I see it?

Hi Marty,
If I wouldn't have seen it, I would have never believed it. A gitzit is nothing more than a tube jig. If ya think about it though,
stuffing a chartreuse tube jig with bait would give it sight, smell, flavor and meat.I still don't know how any self respecting salmon would hit it. All this coming from a dyed in the wool MAG-WART guy!
Next thing ya know we will all be drop shotting for Salmon. Look out Roland and Jimmy.

FOF,
I have also seen this same technique used in Tillamook over the years. The guys would either hover, anchor,or bobber gitzits in tidewater. Some would use a chunk of sardine
for scent. I was never confident enough to put the eggs or Kwikfish but I've seen those guys catch fish. If a guy has the time.....

I've seen a similar technique used for years down on the Salmon river in tidewater. Down there most people either bobber fish or plunk corkys and yarn. What some people do is run a corky down to their hook, then slide a hoochie(I suppose a gitzit would work the same) over the corky and then you also have floatation for the bait. Plunk as usual and wait for Mr. Big

I drift fish these sometimes. To make them float, put a small corkie on your leader before you put on your gitzit. Slide the gitzit down the leader and force it over the corkie, then add your attractant.

Not surprising...I've caught springers on spinner baits...and love casting Slugo's for Silvers in the salt...Marty...I have a blast doing that up in your world late August and September.

I dont see why it wouldnt work. Ive caught fall chinook plunking hoochies in the Salmon river. And once while fishing for springers on the South Santiam I saw a woman hook a salmon on a chartrues banjo minnow. I know that was a freak thing but it makes you think.
I sometimes use crapppie jig skirts and small curly tailed grubs for steelead. Ive hooked enough fish on them to keep on useing them.

Word of advise if you are going to go out and buy these. The hooks are not going to cut it for salmon and steelhead unless your using 8# line. I had the chance to view them at the local Walmart and they didn't look nearly as fishie in person. Stick with the basic tube idea and put a sardine/anchovie/herring/shrimp/or sponge bait under the tube on a strong jig hook. No doubt they will work when customized to meet the fishes taste.

Geez why didn't you say it was a tube bait. . I also looked on Cabelas and they have gitzits that look just like a minnows.

Now those look fishy
