sandy river info
I was wondering how easy the water is on the sandy. fairly new driftboater would like to get himself and his son out for a day of fishing and it looks like I will be able to make it over the hill. Was wondering about shuttle services, and info on the water difficulty, you know, all the skinny. thanks to all, Mike

Re: sandy river info
Call Jack's snack and tackle for a shuttle.(Troutdale) The water from oxbow park all the way to Lewis & clark is very easy water. You could also launch at Dabney state park for a shorter day.

Chinookin. With all due respect to 1 Smart Fish, the drift from Oxbow to Dabney is not "very easy". Maybe for an experienced boater, but not for a relative newcomer to drifting.

Re: sandy river info
You won't find much easier water than from Dabney to Lewis and Clark.

Re: sandy river info
So how is the run from Oxbow to Dabney? Now that the Eastsider is actually float-worthy it's one of the runs I'm looking forward to floating. Where are the tricky spots?

Re: sandy river info
There really aren't any tricky spots...keep your bow pointed down and keep your eyes open. Oxbow to Dabney is no sweat, just remember you have to exit Oxbow and get below the power lines to fish out of the boat.

Re: sandy river info
Oxbow to Dabney isn't too bad if you have a little experience on the oars, Dabney to Lewis and Clark is about the same. I've never done it but from what I hear you don't want to put in any higher than Oxbow, some pretty technical water below Dodge Park.
If you're truly new on the oars I would recommend a trip on the Wilson river from the Guide Shop to Sollie Smith. Very easy float for a beginner and an excellent opportunity to catch fish.
The Guide Shop will shuttle your rig for $10.
PM me if you need further details.

Re: sandy river info
The other variable on the sandy is the east wind that can kick up......makes your boat go where you might not want it to.....need strong arm and shoulders! Always be careful and wear your PFD's. I have used the shuttle from Jack Glass's store down by the Troutdale bridge and was very happy with the service. It's great to pull in and have your rig already there! Good advice from all about the river. Good Fishing Nookin  LH

Re: sandy river info
Chinookin, the lower end of the float from Dabney to Lewis & Clark can be brutal if you have heavy east winds. Oxbow to Dabney is an easy float and not too much trouble to get into but if your new to driftboating find some froggy water to get started.

Re: sandy river info
I'll second the recommendations to do the Dabney to Lewis & Clark stretch. Easy water and its short enough that you won't wear yourself out while you're building those rowing muscles.
Also, like the others have said, watch the weather forecast/river levels. Don't go if its gonna be windy, or if the water is going to be abnormally high or low.
Heck, see if you can offer up an open seat and get one of the experienced guys on here to go out with you.

Re: sandy river info
chinookin.
The drift from Oxbow to Dabney and on down is one of the easier drifts in Portland metro area. I feel it is easier than most of the water on the Clack. As far as shuttle, Jack's is good, and for a backup you could call Grant Brown at 503-312-9204. From Oxbow he runs about 15 bucks, and 10 from Dabney.
If you want to run this water in another boat before you try yours out, I will be happy to take you and your boy out. Throw me a PM if this sounds of intrest. Happy boating.
