Smile Hells Canyon Vs. Eagle Cap

I was wondering if anyone has any advise on which of the two wildernesses (Hells Canyon or Eagle Cap) is better to hunt for elk. I am interested in the pro's and con's of both and how successful most hunters are in either. I haven't hunted either before and was thinking about trying this season.

I haven't hunted the hells canyon unit, the eagle cap is a huge area. Are you planning rifle or bow? We have taken the horses into the eagle caps a number or times. As you're probly aware the Eagle Caps are where the Great Cameron Hanes hunts. As he states in his book there's a decent number of elk in that unit, but the country is big and odds increase the further from the roads you get. Buddies have hunted the Hells canyon unit with success, in good shape and good boots are a must. I'd be interested in helping you pack game if successful, just to see the country. I have 10 NR points for OR and still looking for the right place and time to burn them.

PM me and i'll tell what I know!

There are good #'s of bulls in each. You have more timber in the Eagle caps...more canyon type country in Hells Canyon.

Terrible Areas to hunt, just terrible. I reccomend staying home or going after one of those Roosevelts.
