One less cougar!!! w/ pic
Sorry for the delay in posting this, but myself and 4 in-laws of mine went Spring Bear huntin' in NE Oregon over memorial day weekend. It was beautiful every day as you can see in the pictures...we saw several elk, a couple calves and some loan cows lookin' ready...
Not many deer, and the bears must've been pushed down lower from hunting pressure as we had no luck with them.
My brother-in-law however did come across this kitty on his trail 1/2 mile from camp! Came around the bend in the trail and connected on HIS FIRST BIG GAME ANIMAL at 35 yards! It was a perfect shot...one jump and it was over.
It's a female cat, weighed 100 lbs, and the biologist said it was an old cat, possibly even 10 years old...but it will of course take a while to age the tooth.
This is where the cat was found...
Check out those CHOMPERS!!!
This was the photo shoot closer to camp...

Re: ONE LESS COUGAR!!! w/ pic
Heck of a nice cat!!!!Whats the point of killing a cougar? What does one do with a cougar after its shot? Do you eat the meat? Just a little curious about it. Im not a hunter but dont care about hunting one way or the other.

Re: ONE LESS COUGAR!!! w/ pic
As far as hunting them go, well you really dont hunt them. They hunt you. As he said it was on his tail (ie probly following/stalking him) now as for the reason for harvesting them. There are many reasons, some like the fur/mounts (ie trophy) some hunt to help controll their population (a little out of controll in the SE parts of oregon) and others hunt, well to just get out and hunt. From talking with you the other night and seeing that you are into fishing, so its kinda like asking why do you fish??? I guess some just enjoy it. As far as the meat issue goes that i couldent tell you as im still looking for my first cougar as well.
Thats one nice cat though. CONGRATS!

Re: One less cougar!!! w/ pic
I have heard that old time trappers would trade amongst themselves and cougar meat was the meat of choice!! They would trade deer/elk/bear anything for cougar! This is what I have heard and have no personal experience with how cougar tastes.

WRF,
Since you don't care about hunting one way or another you obviously do NOT pay attention to issues concerning hunting.
The "point" of killing a cougar is partially due to a voter initiative in the 90's, hound hunting was banned. Hound hunting was the most efficient method of keeping cougars in check. When the PETA folks successfully ran videos of a poor cougar getting shot in a tree and falling down(the video was not shot in Oregon!!!) the dog hunting and bait ban on bears became law.
Since then the cougar and bear population has exploded.
If you DID pay attention to the issues you would find that there is a HUGE predator problem in OR, especially in NEO.
I'm not even going to go into detail about it, just search the hunting BB archives and you will find threads-a-plenty with links that will educate you, if you really care......
BTW, cougars are a lot like pork.......
Cougars are absolutely one of my most admired animals, sleek, stealthy, strong and beautiful.
However,
A regal beast that used to be a coveted "put in for a draw" tag
has been downsized to "varmint" status and any Joe-Blow can buy a cougar tag.
What does this tell you???
Neat animals but way too many of em'.
That's why we kill em'......

Nice cat and pics!
"As far as hunting them go, well you really dont hunt them."
We hunt them when there's fresh snow. You just cover as much ground as you can (even by road) and hope to cut a fresh track. I'm still trying for my first one too.

Nice cat ... it does appear old from the wear on the teeth....
I wonder how many deer and elk has that thing has eaten over its lifespan ?

10 years old X 52 per year = 520 deer or elk in its lifetime.
That is a beautiful cat. They are something to admire.
I never bought a cougar tag until they outlawed hunting with dogs, now I buy one every year. That way if I connect on one cougar, I save the lives of 52 deer or elk for that year and years to come.

nice cat, and I love the pictures!
Cougar meat is good. Ive had cougar jerky made by an old timer, very tasty!
I hope to get one someday. Had a few close calls the last few years, but boy, seems like its next to impossible with a bow. they always see me before i see them. A few on here have dont it though, so that gives me hope.

Re: One less cougar!!! w/ pic
Congratulations on your cat!! I had cougar a couple times. The first time I had it, I ate it not knowing what it was and thought it was pork. It's actually not bad.
A cat kills 1 elk or deer per week, 52 more animals will be survive over the next year.

What a great cougar bi-catch from a bear hunt.
It's interesting how a bobcat and lynx has soft fur like arabbit while cougars have a hair more like a deer.

Eating Cougar? Read some Elmer Keith books!
A co-worker shot one several weeks ago while Turkey hunting. It stalked up on him while he was calling. He brought the meat to work and it was alot like pork.

Re: One less cougar!!! w/ pic
Thanks guys! It was a fun trip. It's funny thinkin' back...on the way over we had talked about getting a bear or two, but how killing a cougar would be even more unique/surprising/special...whatever term you wanna use. Then as we hunted, we were down on the lack of bear sightings, but we were all having a great time just being together and seeing the wildlife we did see. And we kept saying, as everyone here on ifish knows, it only takes a second...=) This cougar was just another confirmation of how long you can drive, hunt, glass, walk, etc...and it only takes a second to make an already succesful hunt even more memorable!
Congrats Mike and welcome to ifish! It's about time!

Nice job on the cougar, you just saved a bunch of deer for folks young and old to hunt in the future! Oh by the way cougar is good eating, a buddy of mine took one on a wdfw damage hunt in Greenwater a couple years ago. Shot a 130 lb. tom.
Wilsonriverfisher- if you love to fish, then not killing a cougar when you have the opportunity would be like fishing the columbia and having a sea lion permit in hand and deciding not to shoot one! You would have to be plum loco not to do it!!!!!!

Re: One less cougar!!! w/ pic
Cougar Hunting ? I did a search and came up with this ????
If you’re not familiar with the term by now, “cougars” (insert growl) are generally considered single or divorced (or married) 35-55 year old women “on the prowl” at local bars “preying” on younger males. First off I like cougars. Always have. I respect their plight, and as a hardened gambler of many years, can relate to their bitterness. But that’s not the point of the article. The point is just to provide a few stupid tips to our younger, weaponless Stoolies as they head out into the bar room jungle and have to confront these women for the very first time. (Beware: these tips are for the bar room only. Once a cougar has you in her mitts, the rest is up to you.)
Lucky I got a Cougar tag in my sportspack !

Re: One less cougar!!! w/ pic
You know what ticks me off is that a guy will go hunting with his brother-in-law and encourage him to shoot a little kitty. Even congratulate him here on ifish, post his picture, welcome him blah, blah, blah. But when that same guy was hunting with his own flesh and blood brother last year on opening morning of buck season he talks the aformentioned flesh and blood brother out of shooting a very large cat so that it wouldn't ruin the morning buck hunt.
In'em and Salmon Stryker
Cane and Able
Joeseph and his brothers
etc. etc. it is a timeless ordeal I guess.
Oh, good shot Mike!

Re: One less cougar!!! w/ pic
Last Elk season I was talking with some old timers iv'e known for a long time that hunt the same unit, and they said the year before they were overlooking a herd of about 40 elk and all of a sudden they notice this cougar creeping up on the herd 60 yards below them. They watched as the cougar lept into the middle of ther herd and the elk boiled out single file the cougar just sat and watched and then bolted after the last cow in the single file line. After the cougar took it down, the herd just completely relaxed and went about grazing just yards away from the cougar fiesting on the elk!!! They know the drill.

Re: One less cougar!!! w/ pic
Lucky I got a Cougar tag in my sportspack
I thought my buddies and I were the only ones that called them cougars!! LOL you just made my night!
