Default Need some Help

How do I fish for Yelloweye Rockfish and what do I use? Can I do this in the bay? Or do I need to cross the bar.

You don't .. Verboten, closed, fahgeddaboudit. Coast wide quota is very low .. in the order of 2000 Kilos.

Once that quota is filled through incidental catch .. all kinds of other fisheries are emergency closed.

Madd Dawg sorry about the flip answer. This is old news for most here.

I would contact O.C.E.A.N. president EDSR and get one of the free ID guides for rockfish (sea bass). Rockfish are pretty plentiful and easily caught. You can fish the reefs just offshore in Newport all the way down to Seal Rock. Just go out to the 1st green can off the jetties and work that distance out all the way down the beach. Look for rocks, spires and dropoffs on the sonar.

Some get caught in the bay but it is more difficult. Rockfish is easy off Newport. Avoid deeper water to miss the red rockfish. That ID guide will help you. I can't emphasize this enough.

There are some species of rockfish you cannot land and should not catch, even by accident. In any case be prepared to release any unwanted fish at depth by using a shelton release or any other method you can use.
