Can anyone tell me if you can dig up your own sand shrimp. And if so how and where do you do this? Im in Vancouver so the Astoria long Beach area is where i would be thinking.

Thanks Ripnlips4

you will need a sandshrimp pump first for any production, i'm not familiar with astoria but the same sporting goods store you get your pump from will be able to steer you in the right direction

i'll tell ya, i was clam digging near long beach about a month or two ago (the last time it was open) and kept seeing these strange little mounds in the sand. the problem was they were farther back on the beach, not usually where the clams were. i decided to dig down and see what the heck they were and found out they were sand shrimp. i used my clam gun and went down like i would for a clam. every time i would get a sand shrimp. not sure if you need a license to do it, but it was interesting to find they were right there and plentiful too. good luck!

something in the back of my head is saying that you will need a shellfish license as well. So you might want to look into that while you are out

Do a search for "MATTHEWC" of Pacific Ghost Productions. He is a film maker on the IFish board and mentioned in a post the other day that he was releasing a new "How to" video on Sandshrimping. I bet it will be very informative to those of us who have not done it before...

You need a shellfish license to harvest any marine invertebrate in Oregon. Clamman can tell you where to get ghost shrimp ("sand shrimp" is an improper term) up Astoria way. Other than that, you should be able to find them in any bay or estuary within a mile or so of the ocean at low tide of course.

Does anyone know if the video is available yet? Or when it will be coming out?

It's not ready yet. It will be on his website by sometime this week. Stay tuned on his Pacific Ghost Productions thread on this site. He will update it when it's up.

I bought the gun at joes and am not sure how to use it either? It seems to work by sucking them out of the burrow? Instead of like a clam gun where you push it into the sand. I am going to the coast next week and am anxious to give it a try. If it's easy enough the kids would have a blast catching our bait

This coming Friday I am releasing the sandshrimp/ghostshrimp collecting film "Claws In The Sand" to the public. I had intended for this last Friday but it was not ready yet....so Friday June 8th 5:00 PM, just 4 more days. Acoustic guitar music by Andy Mckee.

This film covers what you need to know about collecting sandshrimp for bait and transporting them home. When, where, why, how.. Also a showcase of coastal scenery and wildlife-a day at the beach : ) Please remember to only take what you need when shrimping

Here are some screen caps from the film

After you watch this film you will be ready to go out and get your own sandshrimp and enjoy a day at the beach with your family.
