AVET LX4.6 Problem
Went out of florence 35 miles to fill the freezer with halibut thursday, and i had a new avet that was brand new, got out there after 3 hours traveling and hit the bottom. Hooked a halibut right off . [felt like a small one] but the reels drag would not handle the fish Finally the fish got off. After trying to adjust drag, i realized that when i reeled it felt and sounded like an egg beater, Sending it back to california. Anybody else had this problem? HELP

Re: AVET LX4.6 Problem
Sounds like a pinion bearing.
Did you preset your drag before heading out fishing???
If you tried to tighten up the drag using the present knob while the lever wasn't in freespool, you prolly ruined the pinion bearing.

Re: AVET LX4.6 Problem
I've got a couple of MX's that I rarely use for just that reason -- they are tooooo tempermental. I find myself reaching for my old $29 Penn Squidder instead.
I'll probably sell my Avet's and stick to my old clunkers. I'm a simple guy.

Re: AVET LX4.6 Problem
I did preset the drag, and did not try to adjust drag out of free. Kind of depressing to get a new reel that doesnt work out of the box!!!!!!!

Re: AVET LX4.6 Problem
What kind of drag #'s were you getting ???
My LX/JX's will make 15#'s at strike and over 20#'s at full, which is more than enough for halibut.

Re: AVET LX4.6 Problem
I have two LX's and two JX's all two speeds. The low gear is great for grinding bait checks and fish to the boat.

Re: AVET LX4.6 Problem
You may of got a bad reel.. All reel manufactuers have growing pains and such.. I'm sure a lot of the old salty guys here can tell you about problems with penn reels back in the day.. Call Avet. They're customer service is top notch and explain to them what happened.

Re: AVET LX4.6 Problem
Let Avet fix it they have great service-must be a fluke. I have more Avets that I want to know and they have all been trouble free for years. Mark

I have a two-speed LX that I would part with. It has made several boot trips but is rarely used because I prefer the EX4/02 for trolling/halibut and the Newells for swimbait/livebait.
Shoot me a pm and I will get to it when I get back from Costa Rica.

Skein, Got any SX? I was thinking of adding one of those to my Avet collection. An MX would be nice too, shoot me a PM if you really want to sell them.

Re: AVET LX4.6 Problem
Good luck You won't be disappointed
Learn to service them yourself, very easy reel to R&R and maintain. Just don't put the anti-reverse dog in backwards, sucks to be hali fishin' with an anti-reverse that doesn't work right

Oh that would really suck!
Here is mine
Don't strip an end housing screw, got lucky on the one I stripped (well I'm say its my fault as I discovered it after reinstalling it, but the torque setting that was used on building that reel was unreal.

Re: AVET LX4.6 Problem
i have two exw 4/02's. i have yet to fish with them. When i got them I spooled them with 50lb. mono for an upcoming mexico trip. I booked a halibut charter and i wanted to tested my new avet out. I wanted to spool it with spectra for my halibut trip. I put one of my avets on a rod and i put an empty penn 114 on another rod. I ran the line through both rods, backed the drag off on the avet, had my wife hold the rod with the avet and i reeled the line onto the 114. About a hundred yards into moving the line over the avet started to make a chh chh chh chh sound and a humming sound was traveling through the line. I sent the reel back to avet and they replaced the spool with a different colored spool( my reels are blue they used a silver spool) actualy looks pretty cool. You'll have to pay to ship it down to them(about $12 with insurance from Florence) but they will fix your problem. I tested the reel the same way i learned about the problem and it seems to be good. I just ordered an SX. I hope i don't have to pay extra to get this one to work right too.

So what is a great price on an Avet 2 speed wide body. Shopping around and was wondering what every one is paying for these reels.

Re: AVET LX4.6 Problem
fishwhenican, I have an MX4.5 I could part with. I bought it with a GFGR 800L, which makes a nice combo. The rod is also for sale. Both "NIB".

Re: AVET LX4.6 Problem
My trip was on may 10 on the Betty Kay from Charleston. It was nasty out. The wind was blowing hard at the docks. I sort of wondered why we were even heading out. Got a mile out and turned around. So no Halibut for me yet.
Good luck with your reel.
