Yamaha Kicker question
Hi guys,
The other day I was talking to a Yamaha dealer about buying a kicker and they are pretty set on selling the T-8 I wanted the 9.9 High thrust but they keep steering me away from it. I know alot of you are using the T-8 can you tell me why its so much better then the 9.9 or 15? My boat is around 5500lbs loaded and I want a kicker that will push it back towards home if needed.
Anyway thought I would ask you guys that know.
Thanks!

Re: Yamaha Kicker question
I've got a T-8 on my 6400lb boat. Wide open it will go 7mph. We've put 15hp yamaha kickers on the same hull and can see no difference. Pushes 7mph also. Unless you can over come the planing speed of the hull your not going to gain anything. Any of the high trust 8hp kickers will do the job.

Re: Yamaha Kicker question
I can tell you that my T8 brought me home from 10 miles out (Off Newport) last Friday 11 May. I own a 24' NR Seahawk, had four people and all their gear. We did about 6 MPH down hill. That hurt.
It worked fine for me

Re: Yamaha Kicker question
Go high thrust, & as big as you can/can afford...cause if you need it in an emergency bigger is better, true you will only get 5 to 7kts at best anyway, but the difference is how high of rpm will you need with the smaller motor vs the larger motor.

Re: Yamaha Kicker question
I recently was looking at the high thrust 8, i currently have the high thrust 9.9. The salesman told me that one of the big diffences is that the 8 comes with a manual choke and the 9.9 is internal and they've had problems with the 9.9 choke system. After he said that it made a little sense to me since the my 9.9 was a little finicky during the colder months during blackmouth season.
hope this helps.

Re: Yamaha Kicker question
The T8 has available power tilt, which is pretty sweet.

Re: Yamaha Kicker question
The high thrust 8 has the same thrust as the high thrust 9.9. I had a 9.9 on my 27 Seasport and now use the T8 on my 30 Grady. As mentioned above the 8 has the manual choke and I really like that in the winter. Works much better than the choke on the 9.9.
I also like the power tilt and lift. All I have to do to raise the motor is hit the button. Love it.
I would highly recommend the 8 over the 9.9.

If you need to tilt the kicker to run from spot to spot this is an invaluable feature I think its the best thing since sliced bread for a kicker

Re: Yamaha Kicker question
Gotta agree, I don't like the internal choke on the 9.9, I've had starting issues with it, although if you yank on it long enough, it will always go.

Re: Yamaha Kicker question
Not sure if it is available on other models, but my T-8 has pull start and push button. If the battery dead, I can still pull it and get the motor started to get the battery charged.

Re: Yamaha Kicker question
If the 9.9 has power trim & tilt the it might be worth looking at. It's hard to beat the T8. I have one an a 26' NR and it is all I need.

Re: Yamaha Kicker question
I have a Yamaha T8 with the manual choke and power tilt. I love the power tilt and the choke is great on cold mornings.
The problem I have is with the carburetor. It plugs up if I don't start the motor every week or so. This can't be correct. I have to take the carb off, take apart and clean with degreaser and reassemble. The stuff in the carb looks like tree sap.
Anyone else having these kind of problems? I see the T8 on lots of boats.
I have tried running different grades of fuel and changing where I buy my fuel. The main motor is a Yamaha 200HP and it has never given me any problems.
The dealer says to have a spare tank and run gas with fuel conditioner and OMC 2+4 fuel addative inbetween trips. This seems excesive.
I mostly fish halibut and tuna so there are times when the motor doesn't get run for a month or so. I guess starting it once every couple of weeks isn't a big deal but was wondering if anyone else had this problem.

Re: Yamaha Kicker question
Lady E
I bought the same T8 3 years ago and put it on a new 19' Alumaweld Jet - they plumbed it into the main boat fuel tank. The jet has just 28.6 hours in 3 years so the T8 has been run very infrequently. Last winter I forgot to put any fuel conditioner in the tank and it sat with the same untreated fuel for over 4 months. It has never failed to start almost instantly and has never had a carburetor problem. Don't know if i'm lucky or you are unlucky .

Re: Yamaha Kicker question
Lady E,
Try turning the fuel off and running it till it dies(if possible) or drain the fuel out of the carb when yu are not going to use it for awhile.

I have a T8 and it does the same thing if i am not extra anal about taking care of it. I've traced mine down to the gas tank. Some reason (unknown to me) the tank gets a butt load of condensation in it. I have yet to do this, but I Am planning on getting a fuel/water seperator to put inline because I dont' have mine plubmed into my main tank and don't want it plumbed into it. I'm hoping that will take care of my issues.

Yes...with any carbed engine and my T8.
Healthy dose of Stabil solves the problem and will, over time, clean her up proper.

My t-8 fuel supply comes off my water seperator (racor). No trouble yet like that but my friend has your woes with his t-8-he has fived it some by adding a larger fuel filter and draining the bowl of fuel after use. Mark

Re: Yamaha Kicker question
I had a 50HP yamaha 4 stroke and a 9.9 HP high thrust yamaha. I loved the 50 and hated the 9.9. It was electric start and auto choke. Terribly cold blooded. Couldn't be relied on to use with fish on off an anchor ball. I had to have the carburetor cleaned every spring even after using Stabil and running the carburetor dry before winterizing. Finally traded it in on a Honda 9.9 and it works good. Having said that i have several friends who have the T8 and they love it. I also know 2 other guys who had the same bad experiences with the Yamaha 9.9. My recommendation is if you want to stay yamaha go ANYTHING BUT the 9.9 auto choke.

Re: Yamaha Kicker question
Thanks for the help all, now I am really confused! lol Sounds like they both have some issues but are. I had a 9.9 before and loved it I just want something to push my big boat back to shore if I need it. I guess either would beat the old 10hp honda I have.

Re: Yamaha Kicker question
Not allot of history, but I revently replaced my 1984 Honda kicker with a T-8, elec start, power trim and I love it as much as my best LCI 906. Broke it in and it has been one way nice motor. Now if I just get 23 years of service from it as I got from my honda 7.5 I will be happy.
