Default Legal Camping in Mt.Hood NF?

I was wondering what the law's are on camping in Oregon (and WA). Are you required to camp in designated camp grounds, or are you allowed to go off into the woods and set-up camp, and what about in the Mt. Hood National Forest?

As far as I know, the only restriction on camping in the public forest has to do with fire restrictions. You should be able to camp any where you want. It is a pretty rare thing that I will camp in a official camp ground. The only time I do is when they start having fire restrictions. Also, the wilderness areas are also fair game. I do generally try to stay away from the main trails, but to me it is like hunting season. When I find a nice spot, I pitch my tent and stay for a couple of days...

Camp away! You might call the MHNF and ask if you need the Northwest Forest Pass for camping alongside a road, but other then that there are no restrictions this time of year.

Have fun!

Please keep in mind... leave the place in a better condition than it was when you got there.

I would hate to see them make it harder to find a place to camp by imposing a ton of rules and restrictions. Have a great time. There aresome great spots to check out up there.

I am pretty sure you only need a forest pass if you are parked at a designated parking area that has a sign that says you need a forest pass, all the gravel roads up there are fair game to camp on find one that is a dead end or has a gate on it and camp away.
