El Nino changes to La Nina
Periodically I check the status of the once-predicted El Nino, and it just gets glummer and glummer (is that a word?). Right now the part of the Pacific that's headed our way is cooler than normal, and appears to be dead set on presenting us with a La Nina effect instead of the El Nino forecast a few months ago.
Here's an excerpt:
Anomalies: Between early April 2006 and early January 2007 the heat content was above average, but showed intraseasonal fluctuations related to the MJO (see following slides). Since January 2007 the upper ocean heat content anomalies have been negative, indicating subsurface conditions are favorable for the development of La Niña.
There's lots more information if you feel like perusing it at:

The silver lining is it should be good for salmon. I suspect not so good for our tuna fishing - but what do I know.

Re: El Nino changes to La Nina
An average Tuna season, means that we'll still have about 2-3 months of fishing, with the prospect of a Slam, or even Grand Slam with the Salmon being back! There! My Salty Dogs coffee mug is still half full.

We should have a great salmon season. Time to start practicing the mooching techniques

Re: El Nino changes to La Nina
Jim, There will be tuna. I remember a few years ago when the tuna flat out left the coast in the month of August and we salmon fished period. then they returned in September with a vengence. It's gonna happen bro. 20 years ago tuna was an 80 mile trip out and back or not even at all. We have been blessed the last 10 years or so with great catches.
Keep chasing them.

Re: El Nino changes to La Nina
Yeah! remember a couple years ago, "La Nina" didn't stop the Tuna then, in fact they were early that year. So hang in there Jim they'll show up.

Re: El Nino changes to La Nina
Hey, I'm not worried about catching tuna, I was just disappointed that there may not be any dorado in the mix. That, and the distinct possibility that we may have another season of north winds to contend with.
As I learn more and gain more first-hand experience, I like to see how the actual events play out against the predictions.
If I thought the tuna weren't going to show up off our coast, I would move to wherever they are. Simple.
