Default Rifle Stock Repair?

I am hoping that someone can help me with a relatively minor rifle stock repair. Here's the story.

I have a Model 700 Remington in .22-250 that has lost a piece of the WOOD stock that is adjacent to the safety "slide". It is a small chip, but has been causing me trouble for a while. The glue line held, but it chipped again on top of the original chip, thus exposing the safety and a gap at the junction of the stock and safety. :o (I can email a picture if that would help.)

I am looking for someone who can fix the problem as a new stock is not an option just yet. (My stock is cammoed!!) An epoxy (?) patch is fine, but I do not know how to do this. This is not a major problem, but I sure would like to get it repaired before next coyotes/bobcat season.

Thanks in advance,

Rusty

this should be easy, with a small can of automotive type bondo epoxy and a couple retainer pins/dowls. just make a little form in the rough shape of the shape you want then after the bondo sets just sand/file it to shape. then hit it with some paint

on a wood stock you can use Gorilla glue and a clamp if you have the broken off piece. The gorilla glue is absolutely the toughest stuff you can imagine. The excess will foam out but scrapes/sands off easily enough.

If you don't have the old piece, go get a stick of epoxy putty from one of the local hardware places like Lowe's or Home Depot. Wet your hands so the epoxy doesn't stick and knead it until it is uniform in color. Put an appropriate sized piece on the stock and use a wet plastic knife or something like that to shape the epoxy before it sets. As a final finish, use your wet finger to feather the epoxy onto the stock. Usually you can do this and it will not require any further sanding, and is very durable. I've used this method to fill the selector slots on M14 stocks.

The nice thing about the epoxy is that it's cheap and doesn't take much. I always keep some in my tool box, seems like there is always a use for it.

Hey Rusty, I'm not an expert but would be willing to help you with the repair if you want. The epoxy suggestions sound like good advice and I'm pretty handy with firearms maintenance and related small issues. Drop me a PM if you want to talk about it.
