Anyone seen any big bugs coming off around Maupin yet?

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
dunno yet, but I'm gonna find out this weekend (I've heard that they are)...even though I've ever really liked that hatch...there's usually some great PMD & PED action about the same time.

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
Last weekend floating from Pine Tree to Beaver Tail we did come across a few of these guys.
Not in great numbers but I would say it is definitely about to take off. (if it hasn’t already)

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
Well I am still in search of my first good sized red-side. Got excited on a few hook ups only to find a football sized white fish firmly planted on my bug. The hardest part was avoiding all the fingerlings that were more then willing to tug on a bug. As for Shawn he was all white fish all day.
I didn’t expect too much as this trip was to get the new boat wet and try out two rods that I just finished building. Both of which worked great.
Just a little FYI it is about a 7 mile jog back up river on this stretch of water. Im thinking that a shuttle next time might be worth it.

I mounted a litle bike rack in the back of by boat just for that section. The shuttle fees are a fortune down there, $50 plus depending on how far you are going.. Nice to hear there are some big bugs popping down there. Fish above has ben poor and devoid of big bugs

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
Looks like I may miss out on the big bugs this year. I blew out my ankle last Friday and am lamed up for a while. Hope it heals enough in time to catch the tail end. Maybe ODFW can issue me a temporary disabled permit so I can fish from a boat.

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
I was actually surprised by the number of salmonflies out around Maupin last weekend...I only saw one golden stone though.

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
I would be glad to help with shuttling drivers this Summer. You may have seen my 9 yr old daughter and I in my white corolla in the past 8 yrs. We like to camp at Macks, and hike around for Steelhead mostly.
This year I have a white driftboat, White Toyota PU, and a on/off road motorcycle.
I be glad to run anyone around in the back of my truck, for a few tips on driftin' and slingin bugs. I am a spinner fisherman, but coming back to doing some flyfishing for Steelhead

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
Fished between Sherars and Maupin on Friday. Lots of salmonflies around, but very little surface activity. However, we did fairly well nymphing with both stoneflies and green rock worms. Hopefully the fish will pay more attention to the salmonflies in the coming days.

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
Love that stretch of river, I plan on being at Beavertail on the weekend of the 9th and 10th so if there is any of you-all planning on being there too we could coordinate the shuttle thing one way or another. I have an all aluminum Willie behind a silver/primer/littlerust colored Ford F-250. The boat has an elk sticker on it in addition to the Willie logo.

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
Thirty six hours and I am on my way to the 23rd Annual Dudes Campout! We are staying just below Mecca a bit and last year was a total drag. I had a buddy give me a bug report coming home from Bend and he said nothing around on 6+ legs anywhere. Anyone have a better report? We'll be there Friday through Monday and really don't want to spend too much time playing Bocci Ball and drinking Margaritas waiting around for bugs. Keep me posted .

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
If you're going to fish near Meccca, I would plan on fishing something other than big dries. Even if some big bugs pop out in the next few days, it will take upwards to a week for the fish to get really keyed in on them. Don't sweat it, there should be plenty of other (smaller) bugs flying around.

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
thanks for the heads up... Meskel and I are planning a little overnighter in a week or two to slap the water with some orange cigar butts. Maybe they'll be keyed in on them by then

Point taken. Really that is much better because of my box inventory anyway.

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
Any current reports from the long weekend? I'm getting an itchy trigger finger, but am only going to have a couple of shots at it because of my schedule.

There are big bugs are out up and down the river. Two weekends ago they were keyed in below Shears. I dont know if they are keyed in yet up towards Mecca.... as the big bugs just popped out there a few days ago.... but they definately are below Shears.
Be prepared....this will be one of the most crowded weekend on the Deschutes all year!

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
Word is big bugs are out around Mecca and flying. Fish are starting to pay attention. Going to be near 100 degrees around Warm Springs today and this weekend. Should pop any day now...

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
Fish are really keyed on big bugs right now in the Maupin area. The last two nights have been great fishing. A pretty good storm this evening with some rumbling and flashing in the canyon, but the fish were going crazy. Get it while it lasts.

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
Yeh, go to Mecca. There are absolutely no fish in the Maupin area. They all migrated up river towards Mecca and South Junction. Not really. The best fishing has been the last 4-5 days. All the good fishermen are getting trout.

Re: Big Bugs on Big D
well my brother and i just got back.
lots of big bugs are out and the fish are sporadically hitting them. The fish havent seemed to come in along the trees and grass banks yet. We'd get a few in tight, but not as many as i normally think off when it is really good.
