eChip Apex
Anyone having good luck with the ProTroll version of an Apex Kokanee Killer, for kokanee? Chatted with FallRiverGuy and neither of us has had much luck with them. Any secrets? Anyone tried modifying them? They seem a little lifeless to my eye, so I guess I will try carving the eChip off to see if that helps. Any tips appreciated -- I have a super looking collection of them!

Re: eChip Apex
I caught a few kokes this weekend with them but a wedding ring outfished it by far.

Re: eChip Apex
I've got a bunch of the Pro-Troll version and a few of the UV Apex. I think the Apex has a better action. I'm planning on using them this weekend if the hoochies and wedding rings aren't working. From what I've heard you need to troll them a little quicker to get the right action (roll over after so many seconds), or you can shorten the leader and stick them behind a dodger for slower speeds and get the right action. As far as the echip, I don't have much faith in it, but I haven't used them enough to give an opinion.

Re: eChip Apex
I have 1 or 2 eChips....but I prefer the good ol' Hot Spot.
30" behind the right dodger they are deadly. As FRG Brian and I have learned your gotta run these at 1.5 to 2.0 mph to get the correct action. That's not to say that less than 30" and 1 to 1.2 won't work.
And as you know most all if not all of the state and world record Kokes have been taken on an Apex.
I rest my case your honor,
John

Re: eChip Apex
We noticed last weekend that the action on the apex with the e-chip wasn't very good at slower speeds. The leader was about 18 or so, and 1.25 miles did nothing for the action. Didn't act right until 2.0 mph or so. Would have been nice to catch a fish on it, but we couldn't stay out long enough to find out.

Re: eChip Apex
Good old Apex outfished the echip 5 to 1. Didnt think the echip version had near the action of the original Apex either. Disappointing to say the least. Kicking myself for not buying up the all the APEX originals when I had the chance last weekend

Re: eChip Apex
Last year I did very well on them. Used the pink with hologram tape and the firetiger with hologram tape. Not sure it was the e-chip that did it as much as the color.
I have heard they changed the shape a bit this year and they are harder to get to work right.

That's the word from the California Koke guys.

Re: eChip Apex
Jzell,
Guess I'll have to change my profile. Thought it said CA.
Anyway.... New Melones is my favorite koke lake around here. Fish push 18" by mid summer. Probably will be bigger this year as some are already catching some 16 inchers. Also fish Don Pedro and McClure. All are about an hour from home.
All of those lakes have pretty decent trout fishing too plus another 4 or so other lakes, all within an hour.

Re: eChip Apex
Nice to have that many choices within a short drive. I'm sure there are many in parts of CA that have longer drives to their lake-o-choice.

Re: eChip Apex
True enough Darel but then all you have to do it walk out your front door for some ocean salmon fishing. I've got to drive 3 hours to find out the wind is blowing too hard.

Saw a great selection at the new store at Crescent Junction. These guys stock some great quality kokanee gear.

Re: eChip Apex
here is a place that sells them by the dozen, no hooks or line attached, they supply commercial fisheries.
