Default Detroit Lake Question

I am really wanting to do some Kokanee fishing but don't want to drive too far from home. I was thinking about hitting Detroit this weekend but have not fished there in years. If I go I will probably launch at Mongold. What are some good areas and depths this time of year to try for Kokes? I do have downriggers. Feel free to PM me.

Thanks,

Tanner

Just a thought about "close to home" kokes. IMO you'd be far better off to buy a WA license and go to Merwin for kokes. (@$45 for non-resident) You can be fishing in an hour from your house and the kokanee fishing is far better at Merwin than it is at Detroit. Especially in numbers of fish.
You'd probably pay for your license in gas savings too!

Others will chime in about catching them at Detroit- I never target them when I go there- only fish for trout or landlocked salmon.

and the dam area, use downriggers and drop them fast to get through the bows! Easy limits! I think they both have a five fish limit!

Koke fishing has been slow at detroit for me this year. I havent given the dam area a try yet, but the island isnt producing numbers like it has historically. The trout are thick though..... and are sporting though not as taisty. Downriggers will help reach the fish for sure...

Most fish should be in the 20 to 50 ft range this time-o-year. Get that can of Jolly Green giant shoepeg corn and go for it. Target the kokes at the spots mentioned above and the rainbows will be a sure bet / bonus.

I would steer clear of Detroit this weekend. Starting on Friday is the annual fishing derby, the place will be packed. If you what to brave it, jig off the dam for the Chinook. Friend of mine caught a 6lb nook off the dam last year to win the derby.
