Cowletz Report
It has slowed way down. Probably a pilot run now thinning out. We tried three spots, dipped for maybe 20 minutes and got ONE. Up higher it was a little better but very spotty at best. We did see one guy there with about a third of a bucket. He had been there for an hour and a half.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">IMHO, I think all of the posts so far are honest reports. Spotty. That's the way it is early in the season. Wait a couple more weeks and they'll be so thick you can walk across the river on them.
Patience.

Re: Cowletz Report
Here is an honest report from a 77 year old man who has lived in Ranier for over 40 years. Reports are true and authentic. The smelt that showed up is a pilot run if you want to call it that. If you are lucky you will find a batch of them in one place, however keep in mind that they move in closer when it is dark. As mentioned, wait a week or so and you will have no problems getting them. I hope this helps clear things up

Re: Cowletz Report
bugflicker and I went Friday night got home at 11:00 pm with the wifes, they weren't real happy about needing them for the 80 lbs. Well we got a cooler maybe 40lbs in 11/2 hour's, bug flicker worked like a dog. I figure we have enough for 10 ngator trips.

Re: Cowletz Report
Well heres my report,
Went up Friday after school, with Beefcake, we got our limits in 40minutes. Some of my friends went Saturday morning with 4 people and got all of our limits in about 45min. Went up Saturday night with a friend and got the first bucket in about 30mins (until it got dark) and got the second bucket in 5 mins. So now I have way to much bait and trying to give away some. But thats my report. They reason why I got to much bait, is because my dad and all of his friends were the ones who got there limits Saturday morning.

Re: Cowletz Report
I took my kids out to the Cowlitz on Saturday and we got our limit in about 30 minutes. Almost every dip had at least one smelt and a few had 20+. Didn't go on Sunday but I did see lots of people out there trying. I suggest that you go past the bridge (north - upstream) and park along the river and dip along the banks. Lots of turnouts. Stay away from the places where people are wading out in the water. I think that forces the fish in to deeper water or in to different water.

Re: Cowletz Report
I live by Rocky Point N. of Kelso about a block from the river. Through the weekend have seen limits being taken easily. Best dipping is at and after dusk but I got a limit yesterday afternoon in about 20 minutes.
