Stalking Gobblers!!!
Last night was one of the more fun gobbler hunts i've been on in a while. Been pretty busy with work so we haven't been getting out as much as we'd like to, but we did make it out last night...Sara's dad had yet to kill a nice bird so that was our main goal. We started working a group of birds that eventually hung up. I kinda like it when they hang up because it allows a guy to move on em'. I crawled up to Jake and grabbed him. We got down in the creek and started moving on this big lone gobbler...We ended up coming out of the creek about 30yds away from the bird and Jake made a great shot..Down he went and the celebrating started..

After his shot...I took off up the creek without a call because we could hear several other birds off in the distance. I worked my way up the creek by myself and without a call.. Didn't take another 45 minutes and i was withing range of a nice 9" inche bird...Mine died in the creek so it doesn't look as pretty..
These two birds look extremely different. Mine has real bronzed tips compared to the really white tips of his. Nice set of spurs as well...

Re: Stalking Gobblers!!!
That's because yours is an eastern, or at least has very strong eastern traits. Two totally different species of turkeys with a bit of cross breeding in the mix I am sure. Nice work. I have always wanted to get a strong easter influence bird here in Oregon. I too Love stalking Toms. It's a great way to hone your stalking skills!!

As far as I know, ODFW has never transplanted any Eastern's, but a farmer released a bunch of farm raised Eastern's that proliferated east of I-5 on the west side of the Coburg Hills.
I think they might have offspring of a Texas Rio and a Kansas Rio. Some girls are blonde, some are brunettes. I know one thing, they're dead as dirt!

Even though it looks Eastern it is most likely just a darker color phased Rio......and the lighter colored one is not a Merriam. Just a standard buffy colored Rio.
