Default Sleek Lab

Put 20 kokanee in the smoker last night.. Took 8 of them out of the smoker this morning, ate a couple, gave 4 away, and left 12 in the smoker to finish up. Asked my wife to take them out at 9:30 am. She did, but decided they were too hot to bring in. So she left them on the deck to cool. Luckily, she was smart enough to tell Lucy, our 6 year old black Lab “Lucy --- hot”, you know, so Lucy wouldn’t burn herself. Lucy left the scene, and dear wife, proud of herself for remembering to mention the kokanee to Lucy, went in.

I came home at lunch. “Where are the rest of the kokanee” I asked. “Oh, I left them outside to cool” she said. “Oh”, says I, “so Lucy can eat them?” “Oh no”, says she, “Lucy would not eat them, I told her they were hot”…… “Ohhhhhhh, good thinking” I am thinking. So, with great optimism, I grab a plate and head out back to fetch the kokanee, “cooling” in the noonday sun. Funny thing about those kokanee, they must have sensed no one was looking, because they up and disappeared. Lucy won’t talk about it, but she sure looks happy, and sleek.

It is hard to resist smoked kokanee, even if you are a lab.

Those kokanee are such clever little fish. And what a good Lucy dog for not eating them as they cooled.

Had that happen with a deer tenderloin while I was getting it ready for dinner - that ole tong reached up and wrapped around it like a banana and down it went.

"NO!"

Grabbed dog in a choke hold could still see end of loin in mouth - I hated that dog

Served her right when she chowed down on 5lbs of Pronghorn scraps - had black runny rehya for a whole day - locked her out to boot

This thread has me wondering if your lab might be vulnerable to salmon poisoning if the smoking process isn't finished...do kokanee carry the bug?

Would think if they reached a temp over 100 degress that the possible bug or whatever would be killed.

What I visioned is your dog with a Koke tail hanging out of his typical lab grin of a mouth and those wonderful eyes lookin back at ya.

Absolutely great story Mo.

It seems as though the bug that causes salmon poisoning is related to saltwater somehow. The reading I've done says that its typically only found in fish that live in rivers or freshwater that flow into saltwater.

If the Kokes came from a lake that was truly landlocked I think the risk is nil.

My dog did that with a Thanksgiving tray of a dozen twice-baked potatoes a couple years back, and recently with about ten smoked duck breasts. He may be blind, but his nose works.

I had one of my labs down a live 8" trout that slipped out of my grasp! I pried his mouth open and couldn't get ahold of the tail good enough to pull it out. I can only imagine what it felt like going down and wiggling in the stomach.
