Default Hi all! I have a question?

Hi,
I have recently joined this forum and decided to say hi! I also have a question for you in the know! Where can I go out of Newport to fish the inside 30-fathom line Halibut fishery? I have a 25' sled, but I dont have the range to go 30 miles off for them!
I would take somone along if the had the GPS coords for some spots!

For what its worth I have been guifding on the Columbia for 5 years now, if anyone needs any info feel free to ask, I might or might not have a good answer for you!

Thanks!

John

Hey Sturgn, I wish I knew. We have hooked a few by chance while bottom fishing but I wouldn't call the location a hot spot. There are all depth fishery locations closer than 30 miles. One is the Stonewall Bank (Rockpile) off Newport.
N44 29.516' W124 22.407'

I've hooked flattie there but it is always a catch and release because of the 30 fathom restriction.

There are 4 places I plan to investigate this summer. Off Nehalem bay, there are some pinnacles that are in 150 ft of water, I've heard talk about Halibut there. Near 3 arch rocks about 4 miles out there are several good reefs and I've hooked halibut there before. Pacific City is also mentioned for inshore Halibut. Of course there is a long boat ride or special boat involved for that.

The last place I have #'s for but can't guarantee any Halibut. This is off the Casino at Lincoln City. You get there from Depoe Bay on a nice day. It's about a 12 mile run. You are only about 3 miles offshore and you can see the beach. The whole deal with that spot is that you must drive into the prevailing swell and wind to get there. The ride back is always nice but it can be hard to get to.

So two places to try. One is called Tacklebuster and is a crazy reef with many depth changes (120ft - 30ft) and lots of bottom fish. It's a bit further than the Halibut drift and you might as well fish it since you drove all that way.

Tacklebuster N44 58.799' W124 02.603' or N44 59.394' W124 02.605'

The second spot is the halibut drift. Watch out for the 30 (180ft) fathom line, you must fish in less than 30 fathoms. It's sandy here with patches of reef. We drift for up to a mile and go back and do it again. Just bounce along the bottom. If you bang a fish mark the waypoint. What I find is that the fish are on the sand near structure. So you get a few bottom fish on a patch of reef and then a halibut as you drift off the reef.

Lincoln Beach N44 52.551 W124 05.529'

I've heard Wak'm and Stak'm talk about some success on flattie within the 30 fathom line off Newport. Maybe he could be persuaded to E-mail you some numbers.

Good luck and share what you learn. Watch out for the wind in the afternoon, it'll kick your butt.

Pilar,
Thanks for the info, I will look into those spots a little more, I was looking at the marine information page that odfw has about halibut, and they seem to get a bunch out of Giribaldi during the 30 fathom fishery, and Newport seems to be pretty good.
I got some information for a spot off of Yaquina head no numbers yet, but I was promised them from a friend who Comm fishes out of Newport! If anything materializes I will pass it on, we are going out Wed. to try another spot SW of newport for Butts!

I will let you know how it turns out!

Well I went South out of Newport for a spot to try, Never found any Halibut, but we got some nice ling and got som Cabs closer to shore! When we returned to the dock there was a guy who fished North from Newport out front of the lighthouse, he was cleaning a Halibut about 50" it was a beauty! He got on his spot at 7 am got the halibut at 9 and was back at the dock by 11! He was pretty tight with his info other than North!!

Oh well maybe I can locate the area on the charts!

Thanks for the info guys!
