Default Morels

Well I'm trying to convince my dad to go mushroom hunting. When he was a kid he lived out in troutdale; when him and his dad would go fishing his dad would fill up an old metal pail with mushrooms. My dad said that never knew what he did with them, and he never bothered to show him how to find them, he is also at a loss as to where they went fishing.

I read that spring is the time to go after Morels, and that they are the best tasting! I think it would be a good mushroom to start off on the right foot with! Since I have no experience in hunting mushroom, I don't have a clue where to start. I live in pdx, would anyone know where I could find some? Any info would be appreciated.

There was a branch my dad cut down off a tree in our yard a few years ago. I carved it up into a nice walking stick. After I was done, I wasn't sure what to do with it. I couldn't really get much use out of it while walking the bank with rod-in-hand. But now I will have a use for it; as my mushroom hunting stick!

I agree, I hunted them all the time in Kansas but don't have a clue were to find em here. I've seen a lot or shrooms but no morels.

I saw black morels at New Seasons yesterday........$39.99/lb. If you can find some one to direct you to their morel spot, you are a truly lucky person. And I do not know of any places, just so you don't think I'm being zipper lipped.

I never looked for them in Oregon, but I know that they are finding some on/near Mt. Hood right now. Look along creeks, on hillsides, in and near burns, south facing slopes. They can be elusive, but if you look hard and wide you will find some.

Just make sure you properly identify them. Some "early and false" morels can make you sick.
