Default When will it close?

I heard that there was some discussion on when the halibut season might close. I'm going out on the 15th, what are the chances it still will be open?

The state is not posting 2007 catches yet:

http://www.dfw.state.or.us/MRP/finfi...ates/index.asp

But... the first weekend wasn't all that. Not a lot of boats fishing and the weather on Sunday was very poor. Also....

THERE ARE NO HALIBUT OFF THE CR..

What Dean (Key West) means is that there are no MORE halibut off the CR. They are all in his freezer!

I was going to go this week but the Ocean is a little rough for me and my boat. I hope they dont close it before I get a chance to wet my line a few times. P.S, Maybe it will lay down this weekend. John

Don't hold your breath on that one PJ. I did not get checked Saturday but I did get checked Sunday. Of course with a big fat Zero on board I did no damage to the quota.

Bernie - your a lucky man. I get checked each and every time. I have never NOT been checked. Eric Schindler assures me that Oregon practices random sampling - right! I essentially get mugged by the checkers in Hammond as soon as I hit the dock. There are now 3 or 4 there cutting thier teeth on fish checking.

I don't know about the random checking either. I fish Newport quite a bit and watch the checkers pass other boats and hit me up every time. Then if a charter comes in they make a beeline that way.

I checked with the motel I was staying at the night before the trip and they told me the Halibut season was closed yesterday at least at Westport. I haven't heard anything else.

Does anybody know?

Still no updates from the state as of this evening. I would assume it will be open over the weekend.

No wonder they close the season so early up here. If they are using Dean as a typical sample we are doomed. Dean doesn't fish, he catches  .

Don't blame me, I did'nt get squat for fish Sunday. Big 0 and I was checked too. Looks like the charters will scoop us this season. August will be the time to go at it again. Halbutcore runs are fun too.

I called the charter company at Westport and they said the season closed on the 8th. According to them the season lasted only 6 days.

John - please... I just put in my time.

But seriously, the ODFW web site reports the effort as "light" out of the CR and only about 1/2 of the folks fishing caught thier Halibut. So..

I'm thinking Sunday as the next fishable day. Anyone in?

Sorry, mothers day carries a little more weight for me than Halibut brother. We have a big shindig planned at our house with all the family. should be a great time.

Looking forward to your report though. I am looking for a window next week to run out and find some fish. I know Odin will be game if a window does open.

Sunday is mothers day for us as well. I've limited both times out and have been checked once. Dean, you indeed do work it. I may be able to pull off a midweek run if weather holds.

For you newbies, let me interpret...Follow me, but you can't..cause I'm too fast, and I catch soooooo many fish, that they will only check me...cause I'm the BESTEST, but you'll never keep up with me... so book a trip on the ROCKET...

I guess some things never change.

Good idea! Let them check the chickens the Black Rocket caught so the real fisherman can sneak the real fish past the checkers.

I thought the Blackrocket would just switch on that stealth gadget the government was having him test and blow past the fish checkers without them even knowing he was there!

Dean and Ray, my week just closed in on me. I need to be in K falls Thursday and we are having Board of Directors call Tuesday. Long drive from Iwaco to K Falls after a day of fishing . However, if the weather looks real good I may run. I will keep you posted.

From the ODFW web site tonight:

http://www.dfw.state.or.us/MRP/finfi...lcatch2007.asp

Looking VERY good

John - I need to be in Corvallis on Thursday - not as far as K-Falls, but... I'm willing to sacrifice a few hours of sleep for a stellar day of fishing. Good reports from the charter guys over the weekend. Looks like it is picking up.

Dean you're a cruel man. Hanging this allure of halibut in my face is almost making me sick enough to not go to work Wednesday. Good luck you guys. Go whack some hali's.

So Am I reading it right that if I want to fish close in lets say within 1 mile from garibaldi it is only open wed, thurs, fri, sat, on certain week end.

I guess I get confused when it is said under 40 fathoms and all depths what is the difference.

Here are the 40 fathom line waypoints. The inside 40 Season is open 7 days a week and will go from 5/1-10/31 as long as quota remains.

Here are the regs;

I'm running with someone with a new boat (will be on his boat) Wednesday AM. Will post tomorrow AM on departure time. I know the tide will be screaming in the AM, but with a 5' swell, it could be flat on the bar regardless of the tide.

I'm suggesting we take a look at about 6A and decide from there. If it's too bad, turn around, have breakfast, and try later.

Dean I agree with you. We get so few good windows to fish Halibut and Tuna that you need to take advantage of all that you can. I think I will see you out there. I will call if I'm coming. Ray, I think you might be right, running on Halibut might help me get to K Falls Wednesday night, or at least close enough to make my 10am meeting Thursday .

Looks like right now I will be staying close to home. Dad is back in the hospital this morning in emergency. Pain has been relieved. He is first priority right now.

Wish I could say get one for me but at least you can release a small one and say Bernie sent ya.

Great day on the ocean. First offshore trip for the 31' Pursuit. Ran 20 knots over the bar. Fishing was good. Limits for 4. Released several others. Nothing big but a nice way to start the season.

Thanks Dean for pointing us to the right spot.
