52 footer catches fire.
Wow, that must have been some explosion aboard that big of a boat. Just proves it can happen to anyone. Story is here:

Bummer the dude lost everything. Glad he is okay though. Of course the staters are more concerned with ecology than the mans life.

C&E,
You will want to change "new" to "news". I always have bad dreams about fires, let alone on the boat.

Re: 52 footer catches fire.
I had a fire on a commercial boat once.....it was just me fishing solo. It invloved flames & smoke in an engine room, multiple extinguishers, buckets of water, the Coast Guard, and me jumping off in a survival suit. We salvaged all the salmon on board
It's at least a two-beer story.

Re: 52 footer catches fire.
Halon is a pretty effective way to extinguish a fire, if theres an explosion bummer!
I know people that have accidentialy fired their halon units and they say its very very messy.

Re: 52 footer catches fire.
I heard the call on the radio on Sat. A plane flying overhead spotted the smoke and fire and the Victoria Coast Guard put out a alert. The rescue boat could only find one person in the water and there was a huge effort to see if there were more onboard. The boat was inside U.S. water so the Victoria Coast Guard passed responsibility to Port Angeles Coast Guard. I'd never heard that before and it was super smooth and they didn't miss a beat. Anyway, glad that everyone is safe.

Re: 52 footer catches fire.
THE REST OF THE STORY... (second hand information from my father who knows the occupants of the two fishing boats)
A 15 ft aluminum fishing Halibut off Pilar Point was first on scene. They couldn't get the man into their boat (he was a x-large man). A second fishing boat joined and they got the man onboard the second boat. The PACG requested them to run the man 15 miles west to Sekiu (?). The whale watcher boat was third on scene and more capable of making the (relatively) long run, man was transferred to the whale watcher boat and ultimately airlifted along the way by the helicopter. The man was on oxygen and had O2 tanks stored onboard which were what was exploding.
