Hey Bait O Eggs, they come right into the S. Beach marina at times as well. The marina store can tell you if that is happening. I've used the jigs and a trout rod right off the docks. Six at a time if you let the first volunteer swim around for a minute. These fish are big and full of spawn. Pretty soft too, if I remember right. Is the limit still 25 Lbs a rod?

Have fun!

As far as the jigs themselves go most stores only carry the ones with glow in the dark beads and large white wings with red tops. These work ok but if you really want to catch alot then your going to have to shell out the "big bucks" and go for the $4 jigs. the best ones don't have any beads or color. They are fairly small and have almost clear wings. MAKE SURE THE HOOKS ARE SILVER I cannot stress that enough. i can't give you a name brand because all the writing is in Japenese or Chinese or something like that with a bunch of symbols for words. Use only as much weight as it takes to get to the deapth you want to fish. For those who haven't tried them these jigs will outfish most others by 5:1 if not more.

Just a heads up for those planning a trip to Newport this weekend. It's going to be congested and some of your activities on the water may be difficult. This weekend is Newport's annual Loyalty Days celebration. Highway 101 will be closed through town for a couple of hours around noon on Saturday for a parade. There is also I believe a regatta with sailboat races both Saturday and Sunday. This may put crab gear at risk and you would have to be careful jigging herring as well. Default jiging herring help

I have seen some post where the herring are in Newport bay. I have never done this. I know there is a herring jig (I have never seen them though) that can be bought to catch them.
Can they be bought at most stores, I havent checked a store yet?
How big of a pole should I take, the fish are not very big.
weight size, line size, anything, Help!!

I am making a trip to Newport this weekend. Might even try to find a crab or two.

thanks

good luck

I was wondering if there are some still in the Necanicum? I used to have a blast with my kids jigging right downtown seaside!
Then I would put them in a bucket, take them home and glaze freeze them for the summer fishing.
I glazed them numerous times with salt water and then clear water.
I also had a fun time once out on the Warrenton jetty fishing for silvers. I noticed tons of bait fish around, had a jig string with me, cast it out using a stick, and caught tons of them! I giggled all day long!
Used them too!

I checked with the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club's newsletter and this year their Spring Regatta will be on the 12th and 13th rather than this weekend. Sorry to give you some mis-information earlier.

I did go on Saturday. Had a great time catching the little guys. After running around for a while looking with the depth finder I gave up and just I dropped the hook near the green bouy by the CG station. It doesnt take long to get the hang of things. We got plenty of herring.

My boy (3) is telling everybody he meets he caught 3 fish at one time.

Everybody thanks for the help.

Yep that was us. The kids were hungry and I had to take a break and feed them. I wish I would have known that you. I did look over your boat for an ifish sticker and didnt see one. Now I go back and re-read this thread I see you posted your boat name. Wish I had a better memory, or paid more attention.

The downer was the guy on the other side of me lost a set of hooks in my anchor rope. When I pulled the anchor I got a herring hook in the hand, with several more hanging there.

Hound - I will be at Tillamook next weekend also. Please pray for rain so I dont have to paint the mother-in-laws house Saturday.

I am taking some relation crabbing for the first time. They are from Minnesota and have never been out west before. I will be crabbing on Sunday for sure and Saturday if it rains. Maybe I will see you on the bay.

Sunday we went to Netarts bay and got our limit of clams. Kids loved digging in the sand.
