For summer steelies I've found that sandshrimp work better than eggs for some reason. (sometimes just a sandshrimp tail) I've also found that a nice fat nightcrawler with a corkie will work too.

OCF/WMB
I dont fish the Clack much but I agree with WMB's post, especially the worm trick where I fish. If the waters low and clear I've had pretty good success with eggs. I will use small hook w/light leader (4lb) and a real small offering of real red eggs (about the size of your little fingernail), no corky or yarn and free drift them with no weight. Fish the pocket water around boulders and cuts. When they take them there's no mistaking it, it's a hammer.

I've used both extensively for summer-runs for years. Both have been good producers. I've also found each to have an advantage depending on the part of the summer we're talking about.

For example, early summer when flows are still up and there is some color in the water, sandshrimp have done well. Late summer/fall eggs are hard to beat.

Of course these aren't absolutes and both will fish well under the right conditions. I'll also throw in a vote for a third summer-run bait that is WAY under-utilized......peeled crawdad tails. These shine during the doldrums of mid summer when the water is warm, low and clear and nothing seems to work.

I like both, sand shrimp are probably a little ahead for spring early summer then as the salmon start spwning in the late summer early fall eggs work well. I agree with eric, crawdad tails are excellent bait for summers. Have had some great days using those. Good luck
