Default Umpqua & Bass

Floated the Umpqua from Second Bridge to Elkton over the weekend. The bass fishing (catching) was slow to almost non-existent. We were taking water temperature readings and it was showing in the upper 40s. We thought our thermometer might have been off.

Is there a website where you can get up-to-date temperature readings for the Umpqua? We plan on doing the float again when the river temperature levels get a little warmer.

Thanks

Do a google search for "USGS Water Data"....and you should be on your way. Not sure if the Umpqua is listed on their site, but most streams are.

Maybe a local guide for the Umpqua would be of service too.

by 2nd bridge to elkton do you mean you did the big k loop from Kellog down?

I've been thinking of doing that drift myself sometime. How many days did you do it in?

thanks,
Dom

We launched at Second Bridge (at least that is what they told me it was called). It is about 7 to 10 miles (by road) upstream from Elkton. The trip took two days, with a lot of rowing the last stretch from First Bridge to Elkton. We camped down stream from the Big K.

There were a few boats anchored up for salmon and I think we were the only boats on the water fishing for bass. I'd wait a while until the water warmed up.

I checked a few of the websites, they list flows but not temperature. I'm hoping to find a site that will list water temperature before trying it again.

thanks for the info. I think the 2nd bridge you're talking about is kellog. The put-in is just a soft dirt slide just downstream of the bridge. I've taken out there a couple times but never drifted through to elkton.

Is there anything you can tell me about the rapid below the big K that supposedly gets some people sometimes?

thanks again

Dom

There are short rapids just before the Big K that have a pretty good drop. Stay to the left of the river and ride the chute through. There is another set of rapids further down stream from the Big K that also has the chute running to the left bank. Neither were that bad but since I was the rider and not the rower, I wasn't looking at the technical aspect of the rapids.
