Cheap Thrills
Okay. I'm ashamed of myself. I got up early yesterday morning, and this morning, and went out to Cascade Gateway Park, 5 minutes from my house, and limited on hatchery trout. I just didn't feel like driving anywhere. There. I've confessed. I hope you people don't think any less of me.

Don't feel bad-fishing is usually fun no matter where it is that you fish. I have been to that Park a number of times over the years as the kids grew- we always had fun catching those fish. I still enjoy going out and catching some trout after work-15 minutes to that water on the way to the Falls- the scenery is nicer out there than in town-- still hatchery trout- but fun anyway.
Enjoy life --thats what it all about!!!!

HB - I thought I might see a link to some seedy websight under the title "cheap thrills"
If you feel bad and want to repent, you can hand out some of those home brews and all will be forgiven.

Re: Cheap Thrills
Brew,
I confess too for I would have to line up with the guilty. I've been a hard-core salmon/steelhead fisher for over twenty years and have done virtually no trout fishing during that time. Then, about 5 years ago, on a whim, I took the driftboat out to the local lake for the opener..........and had an absolute blast catching the little buggers on light tackle!
I now look forward to it every year and have found it to be a pleasant break from the "steelhead routine" albeit only for a few weeks.
But fun it is!

Re: Cheap Thrills
I have an excuse, KIDS. I havent been trout fishing since I was younger and took the kids out a few times last year. I had a really good time watching them. Only problem is, I don't get to reel anything in.

Re: Cheap Thrills
One of my waitresses went to Cascade Gateway in the afternoon, and got skunked! I TOLD her I'd get more than her. And in the morning, it was about a minute between bites. The fish will be thinned out by the end of the weekend. Anybody with kids, in the Salem area ought to take them down there. Go in the morning. Fish on the freeway side of the lake. They hang out more there. Use powerbait two feet off the bottom. Be prepared to deal with pesky bait stealers. If bait stealing gets to be a problem, switch to a bobber, and just enough powerbait to cover the hook, so it still sinks, and fish about 3 to four feet under the bobber. For some reason, you don't get quite as many bites that way, but you get more hookups. Dress the kids warmly. It's rather cold in the mornings. If the fishing gets slow (probably not) or the kids have trouble paying attention, they can look at the baby geese and ducklings, or go to the playground. The pond by the playground has no trout! I saw plenty of carp, though, swimming around near the surface.
