Question What's your take on this?

Saw this whitetail doe in the Sled Springs unit last weekend. At first I thought she was just shedding a bunch of hair, but upon examination of the photo it looks like it's right down to the hide. Wonder if she side stepped a lion and all he ended up with was a fist full of fur?

I cropped a close up of her side.

looks like an injury got infected and made a hot spot causing the hair loss. cougar? road rash? bullet? arrow?

I'd say she side stepped a cougar. Even looks like a small puncutre wound on the front injury near the top of the back. Hope she makes it.

I sent this post to the game biologist in Enterprise that I know. I'll let you know what he thinks when he gets back to me.

My first thought is "road rash". Looks like she might have side stepped an F150:grin:

wow, i've seen similiar marks on some salmon this year. i'd say it was predator of some type. Most likely a Mercury Cougar doing about 35 i'd say - hard to tell.

Pretty hard to tell but one thing's for sure - she's lucky. Cougar, vehicle maybe - what about a barb wire fence or something similar? Either way it might be a good place to go set up for a predator hunt....

Looks like a wound that got infected and got inflamed really bad. Whatever did it, she's lucky.

If you sent it to Vic and his compadres, what did they have to say?
