Odell next weekend
I've got the whole family lined up for Odell kokanee next weekend for the first time. We'll be there Thur-Sun. Any reports? We've never done this before, but got some great jigs from an ifisher.

Re: Odell next weekend
I fished odell last sunday from about 6:30am till about 2 pm windy and overcast we caught 2 macs the first was about 30 in and 12 lb the second was about 24in and 8lb. We did troll for the kokes for about 2 hr and caught 5.never did jig just to windy.however the report for sat said that in the am the water was calm and you could see the kokes rise then they would motor up on them and cast and retrieve this proved to be sucsessful. hope this helps and good luck

Re: Odell next weekend
Cast and retrieve, you mean like a spinner? i've always wondered if you could pickup a koke on a spinner or something cast and retrieve? Does anyone do anything like that at odell with any success? any other methods other than trolling and jigging for kokes work? When they rise are they feeding or what, saw a couple guys fly fishing last year up there. wonder if they pick any up that way? Mmm...can't wait for some fresh smoked kokes

The fam is headed up there tomorrow for some Kokanee and Mack action - will try and post a report back next week.
Casting to Kokes, there are casting jigs that can be used for this, oh and I have a few

You can get some by cast and retrieving, but a jigging action during the retrieve will be more effective. Try different count downs before begining to jig back to the boat to find what depth works best. My understanding is they are feeding on Daphnia. You can long line a lure just under the surface and do well.

Re: Odell next weekend
I have had some awesome days early in the season casting to jumpers. There are a bunch of ways to do it and they all work, here is mine. 1 Spot jumpers. 2. have a pink 2" buzz-bomb on a light spinning outfit with relatively light line. 3. See one jump, and launch a cast just beyond and in front of its general direction of movement. 4. give a two count, jig it at the boat pick up slack, jig it again, all the way to the boat. 5. Repeat ad-infinitum. when you find them jumping they will just be popping out all over the place. Some days they have kept it up most of the morning, other days they will quit shortly after daylight. If you find them this way you can fill the boat in a short time. It is a kick in the pants.

If you get into a rising school of biters you can fill your basket in a hurry.

Re: Odell next weekend
Quick update from Yesterday - Three Macks to the boat - don't have the details on size - they were still on the water at 8pm so wind was light yesterday - well they are fishing from a 26' Striper.

Re: Odell next weekend
You can catch them casting, but the big ones won't be that close to the surface. It's smaller koks that surface and are up in that 0'to10'. There are exceptions. RR, Odell is shaped like a cucumber, right. If you divide it into by thirds the long and short ways and fish the west and north third intersection, you'll be in to fish. Anybody read the F&H NEWS on GP? Is it accurate?

Their are exceptions indeed. Last year we were trollling the west end of the lake near the trapper creek buoys and as we're motoring along I looked down to my left and saw probably 25 Kokes swimming along next to the boat about two feet deep!! So we quickly pulled up our lines and let them back out about five and started slamming em'!!
Not only were we slamming em', but they were the best sized fish we had caught all week. It killed us that we had to pull out of the lake that early afternoon to head back to the valley!!!

Re: Odell next weekend
Koke Fishing was scratch at best from what we saw. All the action was on the west end today it must have been doing better as there must have been 50 boats down there drifting around. Guys were fishing hard all day for less than 1/2 dozen in most cases. Occasionally we saw someone with a dozen.
With the Koke fishing off, we stick the little rods in the cubby and focused on the Mackinaw. Total of 10 for the trip with 5 keepers. This AM we were off the lake at 8:30 limited out with 3 keepers 33, 34 and 36. We found a spot holding about a million fish and made 5 passes for 4 fish - one shaker.
More to follow on the Macks later - I'm trashed tired. My little one had a rough night and chummed all night into the AM I got zero sleep before hitting the dock.
