Question Crab davit mounting

Planning to mount a crab davit to my boat (18 foot aluminum windshield deep v) next week. I've seen them mounted on the starboard and port sides. Just wondering what side is recommended. Understand the starboard side preference for view of the buoys from the helm, but I don't have an approach problem for a port approach either. Also, any do's/don't's when mounting the bracket?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Mounted mine on the starboard side just because it's easier to see the bouys. Some people on smaller boats like yours that don't have a visibility problem but do have a weight distribution problem like to mount them port side so everyone isn't on one side of the boat when pulling the pots. Mounting is pretty much a no brainer. Some place solid and unobstructed. Make sure the base is level. Put some type of sealer in the holes to help lessen the effects of corrosion.

Thanks, you are exactly correct on the weight distribution problem. Don't like everything on one side on a small boat like mine. Especially with the weight of the pot extended a couple of feet outboard of the gunnel. Also, when the person pulling the pot says, "wow, it's loaded with huge ones", everyone wants to see and the weight shift can be a problem.

Thanks again.

Mike

Mike,

If you have not bought a davit yet, check out the ones Joe fabricates at the end of the Marina next to the Siggi G.

I decided to just purchase one ACE LINE HAULER, called the BRUTUS. It mounts to a Scotty Downrigger Mount and plugs into the Scotty downrigger outlet. No drilling, no welding. Great little compact unit that is all aluminim and powder coated. Weighs only about 20 pds. and stores very nice in my boat when not in use.

I have the Ace line hauler, too. I love it!!! I had mine made to fit my Canon downrigger base. It's $500 but beats pulling in pots by hand. I crab in 200'; and Shrip in 2-300'.
