tipping
This is pretty much a question for Oregonians. Does anyone tip service station attendants, particularly when they clean your windows etc. I've not heard of it ,but after I had a thick layer of bugs removed from my windshield today, it felt like the right thing to do.

Re: tipping
I think if somebody went over and above in their customer service occupation, then a tip is appropriate, if you feel the whim to do so.
where is petrol station of which you speak? Most I have been to offer perfunctory service at best

Re: tipping
I have tipped some, the last time was one of my last fall chinook trips, I rolled into the station to get a quik splash of diesel in the truck.
It was about 4:30am, it was cold, windy, and pouring rain, the attendent was a older guy, he had a hard time walking, and it looked like he was wet and cold, and flat out having no fun at his job.
He was nice called me sir, asked if he could check the oil, or wash my windshield, I declined. I asked him when he was off work, he said at 6 am, he handed me my receipt, and I handed him a $20. In a soft voice he said whats this for ? I said I would like to buy you breakfast. He said, you don't need to do that, I said ya I know, but I'm going to.
There is also a younger lady that works at the same station, I have given her a $5 acouple of times.

Re: tipping
It was at Cedar Hills and Hall. Normally, tipping seems to be appropriate when someone who is making near minimum wage in a service industry does a better than average job. Some jobs don't even require that level of service for a tip to be expected. Since I tip my guides, waiters and barber etc, I suddenly started thinking that maybe I've been one of the few that hasn't been doing it here.

Re: tipping
My mother tips every attendant ,every time. She was pumping her own gas once and lightning struck the canopy above the pumps ,fortunately it did not catch fire She will now tip everyone who pumps her gas for her and refuses to do it herself, she will run out of gas first . She lives in Reno where you pump your own.

Re: tipping
I worked in a "service station" back in the day at Webb & Andersons ARCO in Salem on 12th st. If a customer asked for a fill up...over 5 gallons, we were obliged to clean the front and back window, ask if they wanted to have their oil and water levels checked, and their tire pressure checked. Bottom line! Some folks tipped me. Return customers were treated as well or better, hey I might get a tip!
I have been treated with a window cleaning a time or two in the last twenty years at "gas" stations, and tipped the person doing the job.
Point being, no service, no tip.
Impress me, get a tip. pump my gas, take my money, nothing else, ? See Ya!
I hate to see folks who work at gas stations with prices going through the roof for the profits of the oil companies, get nothing in the way of the corporate profit. The greedy petunias!
Have a nice day! 20 bucks of gas used to get me to work and back for two weeks. Now it's less than a week. Three part time jobs is not keeping up with this (whoops, stuff).

NO. In the old days that was apart of the service when you went in to fill up. .. I see a business opportunity here for all those that think times are tough.. The only problem is one might have to work a little overtime w/o any quarantee of a hourly paycheck.. Customer sevice can go along ways in todays market place.

Re: tipping
Since I have to go in and pay for my gas and I don't get my windshield washed, I just say thank you every time. I get smiles from the kid who pumps the gas who isn't making the obscene profits.

Re: tipping
not in Oregon.
i used to tip attendants at full serve stations in other states as it was an option to use their service versus self serve.

Re: tipping
The family owned and operated shell station in Hubbard always does both the front and back windows, ask about the oil, sometimes even clean head lights. And they are usually 5 cents cheaper than the stations near them including safeway. I don't tip, but do go out of my way to bring them my business.
