Hood Canal Shrimping Info. Needed
We are making our innaugural Hood Canal Shrimp trip this Saturday. I've read through Tracker's thread and really appreciate all of the advice. I'm looking for the best place to launch. I bought one of my pots off of a guy who said there is a new marina about 10 miles or so north of Hoodsport - maybe in Eldon? I can't seem to find anything about it online and was hoping someone familiar with the area can share some information. I've heard about the 2 hour wait in the morning just to get your boat in the water. If there's any place where we can get in quicker, that's still reasonably close to some good shrimp grounds, I'd sure appreciate some suggestions. We should be launching around 6:30 a.m. if everything goes as planned.
Thanks in advance for the advice.
Joe

Re: Hood Canal Shrimping Info. Needed
You'd better be prepared to be there real early. If you're trying to launch at 6:30 you'll never make it in time. PM Tracker for alternate launch locations.
Good luck!

Re: Hood Canal Shrimping Info. Needed
I sent tracker a PM asking for advice about a month ago, and even though he posted a thread on the board with a tutorial, I never got a reply. Maybe he get's too many PM's on the subject. Anyway, if anyone else has any advice for where to launch, I'd appreciate it. We can leave earlier if need be.

Re: Hood Canal Shrimping Info. Needed
I'm not aware of any new marina in the area. Last year the Potlatch ramp and the Pleasant Harbor ramps were redone. Hopefully, launching will go smoother this year.

Re: Hood Canal Shrimping Info. Needed
"New marina" might be a subjective term. There is a newer ramp at Triton Cove, believe it's close to where you describe. Perhaps that was where he was talking about.

Re: Hood Canal Shrimping Info. Needed
My advice is to skip Hood Canal and shrimp in Puget Sound. I like area 8-2 near Camano Head. We get limits and larger prawns, avoid the long launch lines by using the Everett launch and it is a much better overall experience. There is also good shrimping just north of Edmonds and just east of the Possession point green can.

Re: Hood Canal Shrimping Info. Needed
Ok I dont remember the PM but you have one now. Everett launch is kind of scary! Lots of broken glass from the vehicle break ins. The location I mentioned is right at the hood canal bridge. The crowds make it fun! What better place to see boats coming out of sometimes years of non-use and being launched. Many not running at all. Kind of entertaining. My wife hates it though. I like to take my big boat and launch it as near to a perfect ten as possible. She always says it is an embarrassing display of self confidence. Last year we pulled the boat and were gone before one guy figured out how to start his truck. I guess I look at it like lemonade instead of sour lemons!

Re: Hood Canal Shrimping Info. Needed
I'm with you SD. North Sound has better prawns and probably more of them.
Tracker, I don't know why you would say to skip Everett Launch. It's probably one of the best launches in the whole state. I've been using it for 25 years and have never had a single problem there.

Re: Hood Canal Shrimping Info. Needed
The Salsbury (sp?) ramp (the one near the bridge) is a long ways from the shrimping grounds. If the wind picks up it a tough go. I'd go with the P Hbr ramp, and yes arrive early and expect to wait, but you're right near the prawns there..

Re: Hood Canal Shrimping Info. Needed
Mostly I was going off the post last year about all the breakins to the trucks at the ramp. It is a beautiful ramp as far as facilities but the was a lot of window glass there in the parking lot then with the post last year made me very wary of going there!

howash, hoghunter (always wanted to say that!, but have NEVER had a reason to).....everybody KNOWS that SOUTH Sound has the best ONE day prawning season anywhere , they (the State) limit it to ONE day because the quota is taken on the first pull of the first pot with a single MASSIVE Prawn...
I will be in South Sound, launching from a private ramp...

Re: Hood Canal Shrimping Info. Needed
Boy you got me on that one Tracker. I launched there opening day last year and never seen or heard of any break ins.
Good luck to all. Don't get too big a prawn Jim, as it might swamp your boat.

Re: Hood Canal Shrimping Info. Needed
If you guys are coming up from the South and want to shrimp Edmonds, try to check out Shilshore Bay launch. It's small but not very busy. It's actually closer to Edmonds than if you were launch from Everett and head down.
Also, keep in mind that you will have more time to get your limits in the North Sound. If I remember corrrectly, you can shrimp from 9am to 3pm instead of 9-1 in Hood Canal.

I've also never had any problems at the Everett Ramp, other than parking when the humpys are running. It is also getting a makeover with the new marina being built on the S. side.
Are you heading out Hoghunter?

Re: Hood Canal Shrimping Info. Needed
Isnt this the same ramp that is next to the boat dealer where the two boats were stolen last year. Wasnt it you Todd that made that post? I guess I could be wrong but I thought it was the same reamp and last year there was all that talk about the thefts there. I could be wrong. I did launch there one time last year. Had no problem either but there was a lot of glass and it did make me wonder. Then the post on the stolen boats. I was just going with that info!

Yep, The boats were stolen a couple of blocks away in the middle of the night. I've just never heard of any problems at the Everett ramp like your post suggested. BTW: What were you doing so far North?

Did the family thing with sisters on a run up around Whidbey and over to PT Townsend for dinner and back. Really cool running back from Whidbey in the dark through the log jam! 5mph was most I dared do because of the logs!

Yes Todd, I'm headed out for shrimp. I plan to shrimp every Saturday and Wednesday until it closes. With any luck that will be a total of 4 or 5 days.
You going out?

Tracker:
I just did a round tripper of Whidbey on Sunday for the first time. It's been on my list of "to do's" for a long time. We were hali fishing in Admiralty Bay and it was slow so we went for it. Very rough on the outside, but not bad once we made the turn and glass on the inside.
HH:
Yep planning on going but I'm a total newbie so I'm relying on info from my passengers. I'd like to check out the DSC feature on my VHF if your going to be in range and try it out. I'll send you a PM. I presume you have a DSC radio?

Union has a ramp. Last year we put five limits in the boat.

Re: Hood Canal Shrimping Info. Needed
Just be carefull of the depth required to float the boat.
That Union City ramp is located at the edge of the river delta. Okay for a higher tide launching, but it levels off to mud flats at about three feet.
