Re: Meeting other Ifish Members
Yeah FM, thanks a bunch for all the great advice and company. Crummy weather this weekend! I still feel like I am rolling! We never did find any fish the rest of the day. When we went in at 3:30 there we could only see 7 other boats on the whole river. Went back up to that spot, but the wind blew us all over. No good for now!
For those ifish members that are curious, we did bring to hatchery fish to the boat yesterday and had total skunk today. I blame it on the bananas. Someone in a hogline above us was tossing them overboard and they kept coming right next to our boat! Three black 'nanners came up right under the engine one time! Needless to say the fish count was a big zero.
Saturday wasn't too bad. We spent all day zooming around and weathering the storms before we finally got the brains to anchor next to FM. This guy really knows what he is doing! My brother hooked his first springer ever and fought it all the way to the boat. Nice hatchery fish, probably 14 lbs or so. Unfortunately, someone (who wasn't me ) was a little overzealous with the net and tried to get the fish a little too early. Instead he ended up hooking the lure and popping it right out of the fishes mouth. Suffice to say that none of us were too amused.
Still we didn't have to wait too long (20 min) for the next fish to hit. It was only a little springer, but it did fight pretty well. When Coot finally got it to the boat I decided I would net it and show him a thing or two about how to net fish. Now you should all realize that we have netted many many fish before, and neither of us have had the problems that we had that fateful day. That day was (hopefully) a very weird fluke. So I tried to net the fish and was very careful about not letting the net dangle in the water. I held it tight to the pole and reached over to grab that cromer. As my brother would later say, "It looked like you were flipping a pancake." In my excitment I forgot to drop the net and so with one fell swoop, smacked the fish up and out of the water, and in the process, out of the net. Bottom line, fish stayed on and after another pass I was able to get it in without further incident.
So that was most of the exciting weekend. We had a great time with FM, although I have to wonder what his opinon is of us now. I really can't believe all the rookie mistakes we made. Just about everything that could go wrong did. Did you ever just have one of those days? Well that was one of those for us. Anyways, great to meet you FM and I hope that we can fish together again in the future.
