Almost a disaster!!
Well, today got off to a cruddy start! First, plugged in the boat lights, had to really force the plug in...and no trailer running lights! Had turn/stop lights though, so went ahead and braved the trip into PDX.
Got on the water out of Cathedral Park, moved the bucket and ball up into the bow, and away we went. Some pretty big swells were kicked up by a tug, so I was going slow (30mph, had just looked at the GPS). I noticed the bouy was starting to wiggle out of the bucket where I had it forced down into. I touched the throttle, and then it wiggled the rest of the way out. Jammed the throttle down, and away went the ball. I use the large size (whatever the model number is), because it floats my anchor and 10' of chain really well.
Guess what?? It FLIES the anchor and chain really well, too. The ball went over the side, about 10ft of rope, then the 10ft of anchor chain, and then the anchor! Caught the passenger wiper on the way by, yanked it into the water as well. Ended up with a couple of nasty scratches, and bad gouge, and a few shake passengers. It could have been much worse, I know! I remember an Ifish-er with a similar problem, I know his ended up much worse.
Re-thinking the way I carry my stuff, now! Have a good rope-clip to hold the ball in the bow, I hate to have the rope just lying there, but I may just go with that. The bow freeboard is really small, I don't have real high sides up there, so I'm hesitant to leave the rope just lying there. I've got a recycle bin that should work real good.
Happy to be home in one piece,
TR
Oh, yeah, we caught 25-30 shakers, a couple of decent size ones, the best action was just up from KP on the East side of the river, on the 50ft flat. Didn't get down in the MC like I had wanted.

Re: Almost a disaster!!
Not good bro, it could have been much worse and thankfully it wasn't. You didn't miss much in the Channel, we only hit about a dozen or so shakers. Terry hit a good keeper size fish but it got off, I won't say why though
We didn't sturgeon fish very long, just long enough to realize that they have moved out into the big river to intercept those smelly smelt.
We also wet a few kwickes for grins but that's about all we got in return.
Thanks for the report Kyle and I hope your ride isn't bruised up too bad.

Re: Almost a disaster!!
Wow, that was a close one Kyle. Glad to hear that no one got hurt and the boat made it through. 30 shakers sounds like not too bad a day. I spent the afternoon soaking up rain on the Wilson. Caught a nice 15 inch cutthroat but that was it. The river is on the rise with this rain. Good luck fishing.

Re: Almost a disaster!!
Hey TR sorry to hear about the anchor rash on your new Rogue Jet. I think you need what I got at the sportsman show today, anchor nest. No more anchor and ball banging around the bow. Also no more scraching the boat trying to get the thing in, in rough water.

Kyle - That first big scrape really hurts doesnt it
New boat requires a new routine and it sounds like you have figured out what doesnt work. I think it was Cagey that did the same thing going down the HWY doing some damage.
I would guess that new boat is now ready to catch some fish.

Re: Almost a disaster!!
Umm...pardon the ignorance here and I'm certainly relieved you and you're boat are ok, but is 30 miles an hour a standard "slow" for large tug wake? Or am I reading that wrong?
I don't even run that fast...You may have been fortunate the anchor was the only thing tossed out.

Re: Almost a disaster!!
Bill,
It wasn't the big rollers that come off the wake, it was those long swells that roll back and forth across the river after one goes by.
Yes, even I and my Boicejet won't jump the big ones!!
BOE, yup, it would be nice to put some salmon into the boat!

Re: Almost a disaster!!
TR,
I know exactly how you feel/felt, when you saw the buoy going over. The hand is not quicker than the eye. Enough forward momentum to yank even a 35# anchor and chain outa the boat in a hurry
Had this happen to me two years ago up at the Fishery, I wasn't going that fast either. Luckily the anchor didn't break the center or drivers glass on it's way overboard, but the scratches are a humble reminder :depressed:
I now keep the ball inside with us while running, going to purchase Big Water roller tomorrow at the show. I also keep my anchor line in a Rubber maid tub w/ 1/2" holes drilled in the bottom for drainage.
Glad no one was hurt and not too much damage, sure puts a damper on the day, lessons learned

Re: Almost a disaster!!
We had the same problem on the Columbia once. Got a short length of rope and tied it to the bow cleat, then we loop it thru the float harness. That keeps everything inside the boat, even at full throttle. Hope that helps.

Re: Almost a disaster!!
Sorry to hear about the damage to that beauty boat of yours Kyle. Things like this teach us little lessons about how to secure our gear and safety equipment. Sure glad everyone is okay and heck you still caught some fish. Just gotta hate that first scratch though. Kinda hurts aye? :depressed:

Re: Almost a disaster!!
Rogue,
bummer about the damage, thankfully it was not worse!
great tip, so thanks for sharing a hard learned lesson.
I have used a cargo net to hold down items up front and that has worked so far. Not many boats can move like your Boice though.

Re: Almost a disaster!!
This is only a suggestion that might help.I started doing this on the DESCHUTES while i was guiding there . I only mention this to let you know that i was in whitewater a lot .When things happen they happen quickly and timesaved is helpfull. I got into the habit of keeping my hand on the throttle while the boat is on a plane. I only take it off the throttle while the boat is in neutral or turned off . This has helped me and i hope it will help someone else sometime .I am no longer running in whitewater . This is a good habit that i still do while running my boat.
