Weird computer problem, any ideas
So we recently moved. One of the computers we didn't get hooked up right away so it sat for about a month. Today I decide to hook it up and it failed to boot to windows at first but with each consecutive attempt it got farther each time. Now it get's to windows but most my information is gone. The favorites folder, Documents, mp3's. All gone. For the life of me I can't figure out what could of happend. We run antivirus so I really don't think that's the problem. You would think that if the hard drive failed I couldn't even get windows to run. Any ideas on what happened?

No, but can you do a quick restore?

I tried restoring from dates prior to our move but nothing changed. I also ran scandisk but that didn't help. I'm looking to see if there's any recovery software that is successful at finding these files but so far no such luck.

Similar thing happened to me. My old computer sat for several months, not powered and the internal battery went dead. Lost all my documents, favorites, address books, etc...

I was kind of wondering if that wasn't the case. Just seems weird to lose files but not the operating system. I'm running a scan now that might work. Seems to be doing a "deep" search. It will be interesting to see if it works.

Re: Weird computer problem, any ideas
If it was indeed the battery being dead, all the data that would have been in RAM will be lost, at least it was in my "ancient" PC.
If your day, date and time are way off then that would be a good indicator that your battery was dead. If your lucky, the battery will recharge. I wasn't so lucky and had to replace it.
All your operating system info should have stayed intact even with the dead battery.
Good luck!

The computer may not have been able to load your profile for some reason "most likely corrupt" and may have created a new one. It does happen. The new profile would have none of the files from the My Documents Folder. Favorites and other settings would be gone as well.
Look in C:\Documents and Settings and see if there are any duplicates. Browse through the profiles to see the contents of the My Documents and Favorites folders. If you find them copy them to the same folders in the new profile. Good luck.
