Default Spike Only Suprise! (Pic)

Hello,

New to Ifish. Just thought I'd post my pic from this last seasons Spike only hunt in the Snake River Unit. Same area and unit the family has hunted for a few decades atleast. I was walking back to camp from a evening hunt west of camp, and was just about to the old canvas tent when i saw a strange flash of hide about thirty yards to my left that looked awfully elky...so i scanned the area around me taking it for one of our horses figuring one got out. Kept walking to the tent and was about ten yeard from it, when out from behind our tent busts an elk, just one, and i'll be damned if it wasnt a spike, and we were on a spike only hunt!! Anyhow, it busts through our makeshift corral for the horses which is just a single line of electric wire, and takes off right in front of me about twenty yards in front of me when I pulled the gun up forgetting it was sited in 3 inches high and fired...Nothing. Cracked in another shell and pulled the scope up and relaized I was sitied in high so I held pretty low, and it was running away from me angled, at about 40 yards and landblasted it. I saw through the scope hair & blood fly and heard the crack so it was a connection. It Ran about another fifty yards away from camp and fell...first time I ever dressed an elk on FLAT GROUND! ANd usually I end up skinning them out with a flashlight in my mouth, or tthe last few by headlamp. Not this time I simply with the help of my dad and uncle drug it to a tree and we hoisted it up and began dressing it out, until I Had to walk back to camp and get the Lantern to finish the job! I've been on a lot of hunts in this unit where it ended up being close to a 24 hour day where I got one down miles away across a helluva a canyon and hiked all the way back to camp making it close to 24 hours...so this one shot from camp was absolutely amazing. I figure next year i'll just sleep in and hunt from camp!

Hunt all the way back to the tent, then peek out every now and then just to make sure there are no "camp elk" hanging around...

yes, sometimes the ones who stay around camp are lucky... a few years ago my mom was in camp one day and tagged a 5X4 bull...go figure

I like a story with a twisted ending. Or is it a story that is the opposite of what is normal. Also a story with a lesson learned about holding low when a Rocky Mountain Bull gives you a Roosevelt Bull shot.

Imagine if that had been your first elk hunt in the Snake River Unit.

That spike might have been too teritorial for its own good.

Either way welcome to the ifish and the telling of a special hunting experience.
