Last years Big Gill
Just getting around to posting this picture of my buddy with a 10.5 inch Bluegill. We were Bass fishing last summer in August, and he caught it on a 3" senko knock off. Biggest gill I have ever seen. Have not started bass fishing yet this here. God Bless you All.

Re: Last years Big Gill
Right on! I bet that fish put up a helluva a fight. It'd be nice to find lakes where you could consistently catch bluegills that size.

Re: Last years Big Gill
Wow! That's all I have to say is just wow!
I have never caught a bluegill even close to that size before, my specialty has always been more or less the 1-2" class. Though that has been more than enough to win me several boy scout fishing tournaments as a kid.

Re: Last years Big Gill
The bottom one came from Paddock Res in Idaho 2 years ago. It was just over 12 inches long and you could not put your hand around it. It was like a nerf football.

I caught one once the size of a dinner plate at Blue Lake Park near Troutdale.

Re: Last years Big Gill
The 10.5'' came from Hagg Lake. Remember to let the big bulls go. Keep the smaller ones and I mean the ones that run 5 to 8 inches. Bluegills can and do get out of hand and result in a stunted population. Putting back the big ones results in their genes getting and staying in the system. This is what I only read. Gills Make good paper chip size fillets. Yum.

Re: Last years Big Gill
At one time Paddock was loaded with big Gills that avg about 1 lb. You could catch 30 a day. It was drained empty in 2005 because of drought. Its got water now. It took about 4 years for fish to reach 1 lb. Kinda funny, the crappie never did get really big or the bass. It was the gills that reached massive proportions. They were suckers for a slow trolled orange and gold rapala, or a popper in the evening on a fly rod.
I know a lake now thats avg about 10 inches, but they would need to be thrown back. Not as many in there and it could get fished out pretty fast.
Tell ya what, if a gill weighed 5 lbs you would need 15 lb test to reel it in.

True, but if they reached 10 pounds, no one would know what they look like.

Re: Last years Big Gill
They are a blast to fish. They tap so light and quick. It gets you going. The frustration of missing then the joy of finally reacting at just the right time. It is so much more fun then trolling. There is the connection between you and the fish. Oh boy, you got me going now................

Re: Last years Big Gill
No, I don't see how it could have much in it. I heard reports of people catching bass again.. ?? I have heard some great reports out of C Ben Ross however.
