Default "Streeter's Canal" silver lake..

Probably a question for EBG Roger but the reports sound spotty at best the past month out at Silver.

When would be the best time to hit up the canals, are we past the prime? How will our weather play a factor in determining peak times?

All valuable information I'd like to learn, all opinions welcome.

Thank you in advance!

Martin.

Hit Silver yesterday looking for crappie. Nothing. Fished 3 hrs in the channels, the lilly's, the brushy shoreline, even canal over by the island with the houses. Bait, lures... Nothing. Must've been an off day or still a bit cold? Beautiful lake, I can see why it's fun, especially when the fish are biting.

In the spring the bite starts around March 15th and the best time in the spring is normaly around easter. Spring is only okay! The fall is much better! best time for the fall is the second, third and fourth weeks of october. You missed the spring bite but the fall bite starts in September on the main lake (wood!!). I use a float and always have my crappie jig near 18 inches below the float. I like a round styrafoam float. when I twitch the float it does not move very far so I can keep the jig near the brush! A small float helps a bunch too. The fish will pull it under easly and you will see more hits. As for color I like yellow and black the best. I have done well on almost all colors but I just like the yellow & black.

Thank you Roger!
You're always helpful.

Unfortunately October is the kick off to my Chinook fishing, and March is the peak of my Steelhead fishing. Sounds like I'll have to sacrafice to fish Silver Lake in it's prime.

Is mid to later November any good?

So what makes the Silver Lake crappie different from the ones on the eastside of Oregon, i.e. Brownlee resevoir.

Martin.

i have been going to silver every weekend the last couple months the crappie bite was super hot on easter day. last weekend i was using very small gitzit jigs chartrouse was the key color for us. even though they were doing alot of work at the silver lake resort dock i pulled in a whole messload of them. although i didnt catch any in the canals, i cought them all under docks very close to the bottom. managed one small bass as well.

Thanks for the detailed tips, roger.
I can imagine the good thing about silver lake compared to the eastside lakes is the proximity; day trip from portland vs. multi-day trip.
