Tying your own bobber stops on a straw(pics)
Slow night so I decided to take some pics of how to tie your own bobber stops on a straw...
The materials you'll need... scotch tape, kwikfish stretchy string, scissors and some small diameter straws...
Take a piece of tape and make one wrap around the end of the straw. This will secure the line at this end to make wrapping the line easier.
Lay the dacron line onto the tape and wrap the tape around the straw once securing the line against the straw...
Tie your Uni knot around the straw...
I made 7 wraps - 5 wraps might be easier to dress on your mainline when you put this stopper knot onto it...
Release the end being held by the tape wrap and then pull both ends gently to snug the knot against the straw and then slide the knot to the end of the straw and cut off your straw in approximately 3/4" to 1" length. Cut your dacron line to about 1" long tags.
Start again on the same straw for your next bobber stop and so on...
Instead of buying a box of 500 straws I just snagged about 10 or so from a restaraunt. Shhh! 8^)

Don't those things cost like $2 for 5. Sounds like a lot of work to me... Just kidding -
I am definately going to try that. I always respect others who actually take the time to figure out how something is done be reverse engineering it.
Hope that thing aint patented

Right on! Glad this will come in use.
You'll be suprised at how quickly you'll bang out $10 worth of stoppers from your 25˘ in materials used.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">I dunno the weight... but it's the spool you get by the kwikfish - "Kwikfish Stretchy Thread". Same stuff you use to wrap bait meat onto your kwikfish. Like $2 for a spool.

This is a very nice tutorial. Maybe topics like this could be pulled out and placed in a separate How-To section?
Thanks, I appreciate the work that goes into a post like this.

Re: Tying your own bobber stops on a straw(pics)
Nices pics and info  but why go to all that trouble for just a bobber stop ?
I use surgical tubing......cut yourself a little 1/16" ring (mini rubber band). Pass your line through it a few times , pull tight and your done. You end up with a little rubber knot that you can slide up and down your line. Also it passed through guides very smoothly also.

You can also find the thread in the sewing department... we use it for sturgeon also... it tightens onto itself...

Re: Tying your own bobber stops on a straw(pics)
As far as the stretchy thread is concerned, stay away from buying it in the tackle section. You can purchase the identical stuff in a fabric/craft store or the sewing section at Walmart for around 79 cents. This is less then half of what you pay for it in the tackle department.

Re: Tying your own bobber stops on a straw(pics)
There is a faster way to tie a bobber knot as well. You can even rig your entire setup and do it last. It is the same nail knot as the one used with a straw. It will eliminate ever buying or making straws forever. My picture is poor, but with a brief description you'll throw away your straws.
Desc. use 80lb tuff or equiv. make a 12-18" piece of tutline(stoper material). Lay it next to your mainline and make a loop as shown below. take the tufline and make 6-8 loops or passes through the hole. grab each end of the tuffline and pull it tight as you prefer. it looks as if it will make a knot in your line, but it does not. It will take a few times of trial and error, and it works better for the first time if you use mono as your main line until you get it down.
With this method you'll never have to pre-tie those things again. Just tie it on whenever you need it.

Why bother, I carry dacron line and tie the stop right to my line. Fast and simple.

Same here. Also, lots of different string material will work, even wax-coated stuff.
What I discovered a few years ago (before I bought a large package of bobber stops on the cheap) is that a thin pair of needlenose pliers with a rubber band around the handles (reminiscient of college days many many years ago :>) hangs onto the loose end of the string and provides an easy way to pull it through after wrapping. I didn't think of the loose wrap technique as StinkyH used - great idea.
Unrelated: Does StinkyH's avatar read "FERAL" or "FECAL?" Consistency with the "stinky" theme, or just a bad font?
