Default Elk Horns

I had a question about when the approximate time that Bull Elk will start to get their horns.

I was on my way to work this morning and noticed about 40 head of great looking elk. The closest one of the bunch was about 4 yards away and the furthest one might have been 8o yeards out. I was excited to see if I could identify the bulls and was hoping to see some horns. I got a good luck at all of the close ones and several of the further ones and didn't see any horns. Based on the size and coloring of the animals I would bet that some of them were bulls.

Any guesses on when horns will start to show?

I also saw a large coyote this morning about a mile down the road. I guess it was my day to see some animals - a nice addition to the morning commute.

Thanks for any guesses!

They start just as soon as the old antlers drop. Some bulls will be sporting new growth as others are still packing hard antlers.

Years ago I saw a big bull on March 15 with 10-12 inches of new growth already.

Last week I walked up to a massive 5 x 5 Rosey still carrying, I have spikes and raghorns on film still carrying and pics of bulls that have just dropped and have 4 " of new growth that dropped two weeks ago. Right now you've got it all.

Yesterday morning, I saw 8 cows and two large spikes in my field that have not dropped yet. I'm crossing my fingers that they'll leave the sheds somewhere close to my house. The bigger bulls that I've seen around here have dropped already.

Antlers are the fastest growing tissue in the animal world. We saw several bulls with 4-8" of growth yesterday at the Dean Crk reserve by Reedsport.
