Default What happened to the Springers???

I calculated the number of Springers over Bonneville for the six day period from the 18th to the 23rd. I than calculated the run size at the Dalles from the 20th to the 25th. Nearly 30,000 Springers gone. The dams do not do that much damage.
I e-mailed the Columbia River Dart people and was informed it roughly take 1 to 2 days to swim to the Dalles once over Bonneville. That is why I started my count two days later on the Dalles Dam. What happened to that many fish in such a short period??

There are no major rivers between Bonneville and the Dalles that would take 30,000 fish in just five days.

What happened to the Steelhead in that time frame also????

Remember that both Wind river and Drano are in that stretch. I don't think they can account for 30,000 springers but surely some went there..

I've watched the counts at all five lower dams in previous years off and on and noticed that more often than not, the numbers don't jive. I can't remember which ones offend, but some of the upper dams end up with higher counts than the lower ones. I think they chalk it up to counting error, or ladder idiosyncracies, whatever.

You must keep in mind tat the columbia is very low this year and that alot of those fish over bonneville are just hanging around in the pool waiting for more water to spur them up river. I heard a biologist saying that they had sonared huge schools of chinook in the pool last week. They said there were as many as 50,000 fish just milling around.

Many thousands of salmon are bound for Wind River where there is a major springer hatchery. These fish congregate in the area near its mouth where there is a major sport fishery as well as a huge indian hook and line fishery. Also, there are a lot of indian nets above Bonneville. There were some indian catch stats in the Oregonian in the Metro section this morning that I suspect are somewhat low compared to what may actually have been caught.

There are lots of fish just millin around before heading for there destination. They have tracked a springer that went from the mouth of the wind then up to drano for a few days then down by the dam then back to the wind. This info was told to me by the fish and game dept at the boat ramp last year.I beleive the wind river fish should start showing any time.Good luck,
