Default bluegill for kids

The bluegill are turning on pretty good in the pond at Vernonia. I have small kids and sometimes this is all the fishing I get, but they love it and it's a blast to watch. Great fish for beginer flyfishers. I've had many days where we catch one every cast, and 3yr. olds need that kinda action.

LH,

I have a few Cub Scouts to take out fishing for their Ecology badge .

Any spot in particular or bait/rig working better than worms or power bait off the bottom?

I tried to email you but was not able to .

feel free to email me if you don't want to post.

Thanks,

Ray aka Mr. Fisherman

Not much beats a bobber and worms for bluegill. Keep in mind they have small mouths, so size 12 or 10 hooks work best. If you can find mealworms, they sometimes work better than earthworms, but sometimes they don't work at all. If you want to keep them busy, use small trout flies on a bobber. Run the fly about 4 feet behind the bobber, cast out, and retrieve slowly. If you use wooly buggers in olive green, yellow, or black, you'll catch lots of bluegill, plus the occasional bass or crappy. Otherwise, standard wet flies and nymphs work well.

I started out my kids on bluegill, and it was a blast. My second son caught his first fish at 18 months old. It was a 2 inch bluegill, just his size. When they are biting, expect to be very busy with the kids. Good luck.

I used to like to take my kids to Cullaby Lake. There is a long dock and you just walk around the dock until you find them with a bobber and worm.
Talk about giggle fishing! This is it! They fight really good! They go around in circles with the bait! I love it!
Also Smith Lake in Warrenton was full of them! Big ones as big as your hand. Not very good access, but if you have a boat, put in at the North end off the road. Cartop boat, canoe, etc. It's worth the hassle!
