Puffin's First Turkey-Story and Pics
I had the opportunity to take Puffin turkey hunting this weekend. Neither of us has ever shot one, so it seemed like a good way to waste a few days. We hunted on some friend’s property out of Weston. Saturday it rained like hell all day long. Since John doesn’t have a 4x4, we felt it was best to get a little closer to civilization before he became stuck in either the mud, or unable to cross the creek we were on.
Sunday morning was cool (spitting snow) and windy. We headed up to our spot with 4 other guys (the land owners grand kids). We all set along a hillside over looking a pine thicket. About 5:45 AM the gobbling started up. There were at least 5 toms roosting in front of us.
I started calling, as John was doing no doubt. He said this bird came in from behind him and that he caught a flash of tan on the wings. Eventually he came in strutting his stuff, showing off to John’s decoy. Well, he made the wrong move…
6:20(ish) BOOM… and then there was a blood curdling war cry… yep, John killed his first bird. You want to see a grin on a guys face a mile wide, see him just minutes after he kills his first turkey.
Now, while I am writing this, I am not smiling. Seems that none of those turkeys wanted anything to do with my set up. Oh well, there is still a month to go in the season.
Congrats Big John. It was a great day.

Dang, were you like 5 ft from that birds head? 3 1/2" Mag, Turkey super full choke at 5 yards is what that head looks like. You smacked him, there is nothing left. Nice job on getting a nice bird.

Good Job!
That is right on the edge of the Blue Mountains. My back yard when I was a young lad with nothing better to do than to chase birds around with my Beagle.
When is the Vacation Over for John. Not many can do what you do the way you do it.

Nice Job on the bird John! Your turn will come soon Andrew. I'll bet John was wishing he was back in LA when it started spitting snow.

Re: Puffin's First Turkey-Story and Pics
Snug - Save the feathers. They make great trout flies, Muddlers, hoppers, stone flies, etc.
I haven't seen any tuna lures made from them but if it's possible John will figure out a way to do it.
