Default Is this tree a hazard?

I have a huge Alder in my backyard. The trunk is over 36" in diameter and its about 70' tall.

Anyways, about 6' up the trunk it forks, about 2' up each fork it forks again. It looks like a giant candleabra.

It seems to be really healthy, but at the same time it looks like it'll split in two at any time.

Are Alders known for being pretty strong?

No they are not strong, and by your description of how big it is, I'd say it probably is rotten in the center.
They don't get much bigger than that.

I agree with freespool.
They are a hardwood.and they splinter easily.I would make firewood out of it if it was mine.

Alders are not a long lived tree. A lot of the time they will die from the top down. Keep a close eye out for dead wood.

I had one like that at the coast..healthy tree and . In the high winds this winter, at a fork about 25 ft off the ground, the upper 30+ feet flew 20 yeards in the air (no leaves on it mind you!). Had it gone in the wrong direction, it would have smashed through the roof of our cabin. Lesson learned for me / us. The rest of the tree, as well as a few others that are similar in structure and location to the cabin, have become firewood. "Splinters easy" is right....

Alders are hazard trees as soon as they get to be about 40 feet tall.

They are just a pain in the butt until then.
