Default Gun restoration??

My dad gave me his old Winchester Model 70 .264 Mag. I'm a bowhunter and know very little about guns so I would like to have a qualified gunsmith take a look at it, clean it up a bit, and maybe re-finish it for me. I also would like to replace or refinish the stock.

Can anybody recommend a good gunsmith to do this work for me?? Thanks!!

Rosey;

There used to be a place called The Powder Horn; somewhere out in your neck of the woods; Forest Grove if I recall.

My ol' man has an old Damascus barrell, double hammer, side x side that my great-grandfather had behind his bar in Chicago during the Prohibition (so the story goes). Have always wanted to get it refurb'd too. Let me know what you come-up with, and how it goes. Hopefully that will persuade me to get this one cleaned-up.

If it's an old PRE 64 i wouldn't do any alterations to it. Maybe clean it up and all but not alter its origonal state if it's decent as it is worth a fair price origonal.

I agree with Okie, ask careful questions first before you alter it. Most times these projects reduce the value of a rifle....particularly re-bluing. I highly support cleaning it up, maybe point up the checking and rub a fresh coat of linseed or two on it and enjoy it for the classic it is.

The .264win is a super deer rifle. a true classic. An old Vari-X II 4x12 Leupold would round it off nicely.
