Default 50hp Merc and the mystery hose

I've got a small rubber hose that appears from the front of the lower unit, loops around and is zip tied down to a bolt. It's got a hard plastic plug in the end. Anyone know what this is for?

I would guess it's fine to leave it plugged. I'll need to look at mine when I get home but I assume that there's simply a water inlet on the front of the lower unit that directs flow into the hose and the gauge measures via water pressure.

No-problem leaving it plugged.

Yeah, pitot tube... you better keep it plugged (unless you connect it to a gauge) or else you'll be flowing water all over the place.
