Default Fishing around Newport First Week in May?

My wife and I are taking our travel trailer and heading to Newport the first week in May. Is this a good time to be fishing? (like there is a bad time). I'd like to take a charter boat out and fish for rock fish as well as Salmon if they are available that time of year. Frankly I know squat about saltwater fishing in Oregon except for a charter trip out of Newport in October two years ago.

Could anyone recommend a good outfit to book with?

Thanks!

Mark

Ive gone out with Tradewinds in Depoe Bay twice. It was fun as far as charter fishing goes. I think they operate out of Newport as well.

Snadyriverfisher,

Thanks for the info!

Anybody have any experience with Nalu out of Depoe Bay?

I'd like to bring my fly rod & a smaller charter is always easier. On the last charter trip I took, I slayed the rock fish on flies.

Mike/Nalu would be great choice. The Blackrockfish should still be on the surface feeding on crab larvae too.

BTW Tradewinds in Depoe is NOT connected with Tradewinds in Newport.

Another suggestion....in addition to Mikey Nalu....since you want to flyfish, the Kimberly Ann out of Dockside Charters in Depoe.....he takes 6 guys max but the boat is designed for more...you can get on the bow all by yourself and heave that fly rod.

I booked a trip with Nalu and I can't wait. fingers crossed for decent weather.

I'll be bringing orange poppers. Last time we went out, the rock fish were so aggressive that they would hammer em!
