The first words out of your mouth....
At dinner last night, Bill asked,
What did I say when I got my fish on?
I remember because this is always what he says.
"Therrrrrrrrre it is!"
I'm not totally sure I should ask this.... But what do you usually say when it hits? (THE FISH!)
I always scream or say the other persons name over and over...
Bill bill bill bill bill! Chris Chris chris chris chris. pete pete pete pete pete!!!
Or sometimes I am just very quiet.
Remember, we are talking fish on here.
What do you say? Do you remember?
Am I asking for trouble?
Jen

Actually I am usually quiet except for maybe a "there we go"....Or "Sweeet" and then when it really heats up a good old fashion...."OH YA!!" In the middle of a bunch of doughballs if I am serious about letting them know I have a fish on I will say Fish ON!! Prefer to let the fish do the talking amongst good fishermen

Re: The first words out of your mouth....
I usually say "Fish ON!"
The best one was when I was a kid on a charter out of Illwaco for those great 80's runs of coho. When one got on the captain would yell "Pisce HO!" as he grabbed the net.

I say, "hey, would you look at that!" and stare off into the horizon ... no wait, that was someone else.

Re: The first words out of your mouth....
That is funny! Bill always does that, Pete, and I finally got used to it.
When Bill gets a bite, he stares off into the horizon and says "look at that!", therefore, Pete turns around and stares where Bill is staring, and I know from experience to look at Bill's rod tip.
Funny! He's always done that!
Oh yeah, I know what I do mostly when I first feel the fish. I do sudden intakes of breath, about three times, then I scream!

Re: The first words out of your mouth....
I usually just yell "there's one" but my all time favorite was when I was drifting the clack with a couple of buddies. They were immersed in conversation and were not paying attention to their rods. Well, the outside rod goes down with a broodstock steelie, i quietly set the anchor, (it was a diver and bait bite so i had a few seconds before i could set the hook), picked up one of my friends rods, and set the hook. I made sure the fish was on there and the whole time the two in front of me (I was on the sticks) were still clueless! With one hand I swung the rod infront of my friends face and told he "here you go ben...you have a fish" They both jumped up and started getting all excited! It was pretty funny...that was my favorite hookup saying!

Re: The first words out of your mouth....
Boater, have you caught one fish this year. I can only rememer boat and sport-jet trashing posts from you and no fishing reports at all. My guess is that my kid has put more fish in our freezer than you have in yours? Come on now, as zipper-lipped as you are you must be one of those slayers that don't divulge any info so as to keep the honey hole to yourself. share a little of that know-how and help us out ok?

Sorry boater, wasn't implying that ALL your posts were worthless, you just dragged that sportjet thing into the ground. I see you did catch some fish. What area were you fishing?

Re: The first words out of your mouth....
With me its usually "Here you go" as I set the hook and hand the rod to my wife, son, or whoever is in the boat. If I'm alone its "Here you go" then I notice the boats empty and say "would you look at that"

Re: The first words out of your mouth....
If its at all possible or the other people are dozing off I like to get it as close to or in the boat before I say anything. People are usually pretty surprised when they are laying there sleeping and all the sudden hear a thump on the floor boards and are splashed with fish slime. Doesn't always work but sometimes if the fish doesn't jump you can just say you hooked a stick in the current and its taking some time.

Re: The first words out of your mouth....
Or the last thing you would want to hear from your fishing partner when hooked to the first springer of the season: "Look at the size of that adipose!" or "I knew some day I would get another chance to try and net a fish."

Re: The first words out of your mouth....
"I'm on!" (excitedly) or, "Fish on" (cool, matter of fact). However, under special circumstances I've been known to say in a high pitched junior high school girl's soprano:
"I'm on . . . my gawd, it's a HAWG! IT'S A PIG. OH, SH*T!!!!" (the last bit as this beast cleared the water by two feet after ripping 50' of line off the reel directly upstream against heavy current, then fell and sprung himself free). Estimated total hook-up time: 5 seconds. Estimated change in heart rate: 70 bpm --> 220 bpm. (Date: 7 April 2001, Alaska)
But what really galled me was fishing partner Slick's complete ignorance re the ongoing proceedings. "Did you see that m-effing run?" (me). Slick: "No." Me: "Did you see that HUGE jump -- that buck could have been 40"!?" Slick: "No." Me: "Goshdurnit, do pay attention to anything out here?" Slick (grunting) "Got one!"
So later at the dining hall when I tell my story, the other guys look to Slick for confirmation and he says, "I was right next to him the whole time and didn't see or hear anything."
I'd strangle that guy but then I'd have to find a new rower!

Re: The first words out of your mouth....
I learned not to holler "Fish-On"...because as soon as everybody looked..it would be "Fish-Off". So we kinda keep the shouting down in my boat...We all take naps now and then...so someone is appointed to be on "Rod Watch". They'll usually grab the rod and roust whoever the rod belongs to. At least when we're anchor fishing. For the most part...when a rod drops..the name of the person the rod belongs to is said.
